    1. [OHSENECA] Re: Louisa & Henry KNEPPER
    2. Hi Sue, I was unable to locate Louisa & Henry Knepper in any of our Seneca County, Ohio publications, including our Cemetery Inscriptions book. However I did find, on the internet, references to a Henry and Louisa Knepper that might relate to your forebears. On www.familysearch.com I found a Henry Knepper as one of 17 (repeat, 17) children born to Andrew & Sarah C. (Alspach) Knepper between abt. 1826 and 1854. Sarah and all her children were listed as born in Fairfield County, Ohio. Andrew was listed as born in Virginia. Where a place of burial was given for the members of this family, the place was identified as Maple Grove Cemetery, Findlay, Hancock County, Ohio, with two exceptions: daughter Emma Knepper was listed as buried in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, and son Wesley Knepper was listed as buried in Flick Cemetery, Hancock County, Ohio. Henry Knepper was shown as born May 1827 in Fairfield County, Ohio, but no death date or burial place was given. The death years for two of the sons of Andrew and Sarah Knepper ( Wesley and Samuel) were given as 1913, occurring in the period covered by the Ohio Death Certificate Index, 1913-1937. In checking this Index I found both Wesley and Samuel listed, with details on their death dates, locations (Hancock County), and death certificates. Since you mentioned that Louisa Knepper died in Seneca County, Ohio 12 Apr 1917, I checked the same Index for her, but without success. The same Family Group Record for Andrew and Sara Knepper also gives the marriage date and place for Henry Knepper as 1 Jan 1860, Fairfield County, Ohio. Henry's wife's name is listed as Louisa "Laura" M. Cramer, born about 1839. Henry's birthdate is given as May, 1827 Additionally, a search on Google brings up a Louisa Kramer, born about 1840, with father Jacob Kramer and mother Elizabeth Williams. Louisa is listed as married to a Henry Knepper, 1 January 1860, in Fairfield County, Ohio. Just to muddy the waters further, in Ancestry.com, I find a Henry and Louisa Knepper and family listed in the 1870 Federal Census. This Henry's birthplace is given as Ridge, Wyandot County, Ohio. The family is listed as: Henry, age 42, farmer, born Ohio (estimated birth year 1828) Louisa, 33, keeping house, born Ohio (estimated birth year 1837) Emma, 9, at home, born Ohio Effie May, 8 (?), born Ohio Laura B., 8 (?), born Ohio, Gertrude, 5/12, born Ohio. Also in Ancestry.com, in the 1880 Federal Census, I find the same Knepper household. The Census Place was listed as Ridge, Wyandot (County), OH. Read first name, relation, age, birthplace, occupation, father's birthplace, and mother's birthplace: Henry, self, 54 (estimated birth year 1826), OH, farmer, OH, OH Louisa, wife, 42 (estimated birthyear 1838), keeping house, OH, OH Emma, dau, 19, OH, at home, OH, OH Effa, dau, 17, OH, at home, OH, OH Laura, dau, 14, OH, OH, OH Clara, dau, 9, OH, OH, OH Louis M., son, 3, OH, OH, OH. In the above 1870 and 1880 censuses, the estimated birth years for Henry Knepper (1828 and 1826 respectively), are fairly close to the birth year (1827) for the Henry Knepper who was born in Fairfield County. Similarly, the estimated birth years for Louisa Knepper in the 1870 and 1880 censuses (1837 and 1838 respectively) are also very close to the estimated birth year (about 1839/1840) for the Louisa Cramer who appears to have been born in Fairfield County, OH. It would be tempting to consider the two families headed by a Henry and Louisa Knepper as one and the same, except for the one family being associated with Fairfield County (births) and Hancock County (burials), while the other is associated with Wyandot County, Ohio (birth of a Henry Knepper). However, if you haven't checked already, it would seem worthwhile to investigate the Maple Grove Cemetery, Findlay, Hancock County, Ohio as a possible burial location for your Henry Knepper, as well as cemeteries in Wyandot County, Ohio.
