I've decided to start working on one of my New Year's resolutions. This will be the year I find out what happened to my great-uncle Mark Harry Shank. Mark was born on Jan. 1, 1892 in Attica. But in the birth records book at the Probate Court in Tiffin the name is listed as Harry W. Shank - I know it's the same person, don't when or reason for the name change. He is listed as Mark Harry in a bio of his father in "A Centennial History of Seneca County Ohio" published in 1902. The only other info about him I have is the following and a family story. First the facts, SHANK, MARK H., NA Tiffin, O. Aug 8/18. Br Attica, O. Jan 1/1892. 4163108, White, MG OTS Cp Hancock Ga to disch. Pvt. Hon disch R. F. D. 4, Nov 30/18 Attica, O. NA = National Army Br = Born MG = Machine Gun OTS = Officer Training School Cp = Camp Pvt = Private >From "The Official Roster of Ohio Soldiers, Sailors and Marines in the World War 1917-1918", Volume XV The family story is that when Mark was in the Army he came home earlier than expected and caught his wife in bed with another man. He pulled a gun and killed the man. He swore that his wife was being raped because she would never cheat on him - she denied being raped. Supposedly he was hung for this. His father disowned him. There are a few problems with this - this story was suppose to happen when he was in the Army but above it says that he was honorably discharged. Nobody knows what happened to him. When his father died in 1940, Mark Harry was not mentioned in his obit. I asked a local genealogist (local to me in Texas) where I should go with this she said to check the local papers. If the family story was true it was probably reported even if it happened at some Army base. Any one have any ideas? I would really like to find out what happened to him. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
