There was indead a Mount Gilead in Seneca County. It was located in Liberty township. Although it doesn't appear on the map, it may still be marked by road signs. It was located along County Road 11, at the intersection with County Road 592. Hi Listers, I haven't posted this in a while so I will try again. I'm looking for any information on Marcus Young Graff and his wife Maria Herstus Johnson who migrated to Tiffin, Seneca county in the early 1820s. Marcus was on the County Commission for a number of years. I'm also looking for information on their children Marcus Young Graff, born 1828 in Maryland Eleanor D.,born 1820 in Maryland Sabastiana, born 1832 in Ohio John P.C., born 1836 in Ohio Eli D., born 1839 in Ohio. Thank you for any help.....................Pat Saemmer
Also ck out webpages of locations plan to visit for current addresses, phone #'s & open hrs. Could also request map of area before you go, this would make traveling around much easier. Hope this info helps. ----- Original Message ----- From: Yenta To: [email protected] Sent: Monday, May 29, 2000 9:11 AM Subject: Research Trip Hi, Julie. My brother & I are also making trip to Seneca Cty (Fostoria/Tiffin) June 21-26th. Prior to trip you might try searching library sites as we have for Fostoria. Two years ago my brother spent few days there for high school reunion and found library obituaries files great source. Just received a reply to inquiry regarding what is available. If you are looking for info in Tiffin, library webpage might be helpful. Here's brief list of what Fostoria library has available (from their webpage): Fostoria newspapers are on microfilm. Number of other books, pamphlets & records are available for Fostoria as well as Seneca, Hancock and Wood Counties. Records of Fostoria's Fountain Cemetery, as compiled by the Church of Latter Day Saints. An index of obituaries from Fostoria newspapers is also maintained. Census records are kept with special emphasis on Seneca, Hancock and Wood Counties as well as cemetery records for these three counties. Email reply from Fostoria Library: Fostoria Cemetery cards have been micro-filmed and are here at the library. Seneca Co. cemeteries have been read and they are in a bound book for the county. The Luckey area cemetery would be in the Wood Country, Troy Township Cemetery book. We have these records at the library. Patricia Bowman, Local History & Genealogy Dept. [email protected] Sometimes county clerks will allow you to look at the records especially with dates as far back as yours are. Sorry, had email info on Tiffin also but apparently deleted it. Here is a website for Seneca County: [email protected]~ohseneca/Seneca.html which lists numerous links. A suggestion regarding baptism records would first be know name and location of church where baptism took place, then contact national office of that church denomination to inquire how/where to obtain these records. Even if you don't have exact date but just a range of possible years, they may be able to help you. I'm fairly new to this so not fully knowledgeable. Took a 2-day course on genealogy research. Otherwise, my beginnings were when I sat down with both grandmothers (in mid-50s) and listed all family members as far back as they could remember. Of course, never realizing I'd need much more in depth info than just names. We are in the infancy of our family search. Even tho have names back to our gr-gr-gr-grandparents, there is no documentation of dates nor most locations. A real challenge faces us. One thing I've started doing is printing the emails of related information since receive much more than needed. Hope this has been helpful & not too confusing. Good Luck in your search also. In addition to Susan's good info below, I'd like to add one important item. Be sure you check the times that the places you want to visit are open. I went to the BGSU archives last year on the last day of my week stay (from AZ) and found they closed early in the summer. Noon I think. I'd just spent the morning at the BG public library (open all day and weekends) and was disappointed to miss the archives that afternoon. Hopefully I've learned my lesson on planning. <G> Regards, Tom Pfeifer [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, May 28, 2000 10:34 PM Subject: Re: Research Trip Help > I visited Seneca Co. a number of years ago. I visited Seneca Co. a number of years ago. The public library in Tiffin had a genealogy collection, files, etc. I would also recommend Bowling Green State University as it is a designated American History Research Center for Seneca Co. and other counties in northwest Ohio. Ohio Genealogical Guide by Carol Willsey Bell, says "Ohio death records begin in 1867 in all counties. Again, a few counties recorded births during the years 1856/1857, but not all. The are found recorded in large journals, which may or may not be indexed. Some counties keep a card file of birth records...The are very incomplete and often inaccurate. After Dec. 20, 1908, they are recorded with the State Dept. of Health. They are also recorded in each county or city Health Dept." Good luck. Susan
This came to me, don't think it made it to the list. Please remember to send a copy to your reply to Pat as she is not subscribed (at least not under this address). I have some questions regarding Eberhard surname. David Eberhard married Christina Eishenhart. Did they have a son named George and also a son named William D.B. (David Benjamin)? Or is William D.B. the son of George? Is anyone researching the Eberhard surname that could possibly answer this for me? Thank you. Sue Chism [email protected] Time is a river with no banks.
Dear Julie, I guess that the county seat in Seneca county would be the best place to start. Have you visited the rootsweb page on the web that we have about Seneca county? There is a lot of info there, like major amounts and there are people you can contact by email to get ideas who know the county. Also at the site for the Ohio Historical Society www.ohio.gov and then there is a link to the society. They have a lot of info about who has what where. Most birth/death records are kept at the county level until like 1880. Then they are kept at the state level (in Ohio), in order to search the state level, you have to send letters etc. Also the Ohio Genealogical Society site has some info and Mansfield is not too far from Seneca County, so a trip there might not be a bad idea either. Good Luck! I'm flying from California to Ohio to do some research June 13-23. Does anyone know where's the best possibility for researching birth/baptism/or general records for Adams Township era 1829-30. Researching Hastings mainly but one married a Parker. My gr. gr. grandfather, Ephraim Hastings, was married to Sarah, the daughter of Andress/Andrus/Andrews Parker. The wife of Andrus could be from the Seneca tribe. I've been told that one of the daughters or granddaughters of Chief Red Jacket (who signed the Peace Treaty after the Rev. War) was named Parker. Any ideas how/where to research this information? I'd appreciate any help or advice as I've never been in Seneca County ! Thanks, Julie Hastings-Barnes
I just picked up a new State of Ohio map at the Auto club last week. It shows Mt. Gilead in Marion County about 13 miles east of the town of Marion. There is only one Mt. Gilead listed in Ohio. Can anyone tell me about Mount Gilead that is supposed to also be located in Seneca county, OH? I have been researching relatives in the Mount Gilead that is in Morrow County, OH and really have no leads there, but since finding this bit of information I see there are two of my ancestors surnames in Seneca: Steve Fitzgerald b. For your reference, Note that IOOF stands for "Independent Order of Odd Fellows, a fraternal organization founded about 1818. This was the second Tiffin IOOF chapter. The following names appear on the charter of IOOF #39 of Tiffin, Ohio, dated 18 May, 1886, the original of which I own. C. G. Meyer, Scudder Chamberlain, James W. Love, Samuel Stricker, J. B. Zint, Frederick P. Bloom, Daniel L. Lott, L. J. Clouser, N. M. Greybill, Aaron Kreader, Samuel Horner, John F. Reif, H. J. Stoltzenbaugh, Joseph Secrist, A. L. Flack, John H. Bennehoff, Mark D. Kentfield, John C. Thompson, Richard F. Palmer. Signed at the bottom by John C. Underwood, Lieutenant-General Commanding. I have no further information about this chapter, but I would like to hear from anyone who does. I see no mention of them in the Columbian yearbooks of that time period. It is not likely that they taught at Calvert. The only other high school in Tiffin at that time was the Jr. Home High School. However, I see no mention of them in their history either. Another possibility is Heidelberg College, as they had strong Math and Chemistry departments. You can contact Heidelberg for information. They may have also taught at a lower level school. The Tiffin City Schools would also have those records, and you should contact them for more information.
