I grew up about a half mile away from some Bastians in Seneca County...I believe on TWP rd 144 between the river road (Co Rd 33) and Morrison Rd (Co Rd 15). This was in pleasant Twp, time was mid 1950s to mid 1970s. My parents probably know more details, I live in California now. We used to by eggs from them when I was 5-10 years old. Haven't heard that name in a while. What specific details are you looking for? I am looking for information re. two brothers: Edward (1886-1961) and Charles H.(1890-1958) BASTIAN. I recently learned of a Charles Bastian who married Elisabeth Nighswander in Seneca, Ohio on May 6, 1884. The dates make it possible that he was the father of my Bastians. Has anyone information that could help me determine a connection? Other family names: OSBORN and KOPPER Kate
Kate, We checked the Seneca County Genealogical Society Cemetery Book and the Pleasant Union Cemetery Book. A Charles and Elizabeth Bastian are buried at Pleasant Union Cemetery, p 83, but have slightly different ages than you noted. Charles's record/inscription reads: 1851-1935, male/married/age 84, last residence Ft. Seneca, b Ft. Seneca/ d 29 May 1935. Elizabeth's record reads: 1861-19 __, female/ married/ age 79 y 2 m 26 d/ last residence Ft. Seneca/ d 11 Oct 1940. they share a common tombstone. The Marriages of Seneca County Book, p 18, listed Charles Bastain, age 21, married Elisabeth Nighswander, age 18, May 6, 1884, officiated by a William Smith, MG (Minster of the Gospel), Citation No. 9-132. There is no Edward Bastain in either book. Lynda & Jim
For oldies or newbies. . . . you can search the following batch numbers for Seneca County, Ohio, online at www.familysearch.org , the LDS site. To search only these, go to the above, then click on the tab for Custom Search. Next screen, click on International Genealogical Index. ( IGI) On the next screen, fill in the batch number, specify North America as the region, then fill in a surname. (I leave the exact spelling feature off to perhaps pick up the misspells.) If you still can't find a record, you can search the entire filmed batch a page at a time by not entering any surname. While this is tedious, I did find a marriage that I was almost *sure* had to be there by searching page by page. Both bride and groom's surnames were misspelled from the original, but were recognizable, they just wouldn't come up on the search for the surnames. This method will work for any IGI filmed records for a different county or country. For instance, if you already found an ancestor in filmed records of Germany on this site, note the batch number, then go back to the screen above, entering Germany as the region, the batch number, etc., and you can search that batch. When you bring up an individual record, you can see the batch number, source number etc, below it. Clicking on the source number will give you the information on the source. Also, while not all records are online, here's a tip: once you find a batch for a specific location, try going one or two numbers up or back, to discover more batches, either using the same initial or changing to another, and you may come up with additional batches. Note the sequences below. If you have easy access to a FHL, these batch numbers will be on microfiche, but my library doesn't have any way to distinguish which are online at the moment. But you can get them there. I have made notes of various county batch numbers as I went along, so that as new names come up in my search, I can go back easily to those specific counties. Hope this is helpful. ( and makes sense!) Here are the Batch numbers I have determined: Seneca County Marriages from Probate records (initial M) M514111 M514112 M514113 M514114 Seneca County Births/Christening (initial C) C514116 While not the original document, this gives you a direction to go for documentation. Hi, I don't know if I am writting to the correct site. I am looking for Descedants of Susie L. Garey born April 24,1883 in Greene county, Pa. She moved to Wood County Ohio with her parents in 1900 to Bradner, Ohio. In 1907 her mother Sarah Lee Garey wife of Peter Gary died, and Peter and my Grandfather Daniel Lee Gary and family moved back to Pa. where Peter died in 1909. I just learned that one of my fathers Aunts, Aunt Susie married a Lemmon and lived in Tiffin, Ohio. She had 2 sons, I died in the War. If I am in the right place and you have any info on this person or there descendants I would surely love to hear. Like where is her sons family, where is she buried. Anything. And any other Garey descendants out there. Until July 26th, I didn't even know my family was ever in Ohio. But I have found several after finding my Great Grandmothers grave marker and a couple of Grandfathers Brothers in Bradner Cemetary, Wood County, Ohio. Any help will be appreciated. -- Linda Lacich
The other day Steve Hartzell wrote: <Toledo has several library branches, but the one you want to go to is the one right near the Lucas County Courthouse.> Just to let you all know, the Toledo Local History and Genealogy Library is currently located at 2744 110th Street in Point Place. They are remodeling the downtown library and until all of the work is done they have moved that entire section. They will be moving to the main library as soon as their new area is remodeled though. So call before you make the trip at (419) 259-5233. Sincerely, Denise Pitzen P.S. Steve, I love your website. I have learned so much from it.
Hi, Thanks so much to the people that let me know that Adrian is in Big Springs T. That is a big help in my search. Carol
Just some general information for researchers. As far as I know, the best sources of Census records in the Northwest Ohio area are the public libraries at Findlay & Toledo. Findlay's collection is surprisingly large, and Toledo's is very large. Toledo has several library branches, but the one you want to go to is the one right near the Lucas County Courthouse. It has as good a Local History department as any library within 50 miles of Seneca County. Another outstanding collection can be found at the Hayes center in Fremont. For Tiffin & Seneca County folks, always start at the Tiffin Seneca Public Library. Their collection is very good, and their staff is very helpfull. All 4 are highly recommended to anyone researching people in Northwest Ohio. Steve Hartzell

Hi everyone, I'm new to the list and wonder if someone could please tell me what township the town of Adrian would be in on the 1850 census. I want to search for Jane KILBORN MC KENZIE and her son, Alonzo, about 7 yrs. old. They may be living with a relative or someone else and if I knew the township, it would narrow down my search. Alonzo's civil war papers say he was born in Adrian. Thank you very much for your assistance. Carol Harrison
Don't forget the fantastic Allen Co. Library at Ft. Wayne, IN, close to the western edge of Ohio. One of the best libraries for genealogy. Carol
If you would like me to check out a name in my file I would be very happy to do that. Have found this family in the 1880 Seneca County census in Big Spring Township, and would like to hear from anyone who has a connection or may have more info. The handwriting isn't real clear, but am taking surname to be DUMONT. If someone knows otherwise would appreciate that also <smile> If someone has access to 1900 Seneca census index and can locate township for any of these there, would appreciate that also. I don't know if Catherine may have remarried or would still be in Seneca in 1900 tho. Catherine may possibly be in my line, due to some other clues. Thanks in advance, listing follows: 1880 Seneca Co. p308A DUMONT, Catherine age 49 widowed, born Belgium, parents born Belgium Elizabeth, age 20 daughter, born Belgium, parents born Belgium John, age 16, son, born Belgium, " Anthony, age 14, son, born Belgium, " " Justine, age 12, daughter, born Belgium, " " Nicholas, age 10, son born Belgium, " " Rosa, age 6, daughter, born Ohio, " " Jane [email protected]
I was interested to see the name WAGNER in your surname list. My great grandmother was Mary WAGNER (1864-1953) married to Amos OSBORN, and daughter of Alfonso and Josephine WAGNER. Any connections?
