Hi Caral, I am the co-editor of Seneca Searchers where you saw the Butchering Day picture on page 72 of the Sept/Oct 2000 issue. This photo was submitted for publication by Margaret EBERHART SCHREINER. Margaret does not have e-mail, but I told her of your interest in the MECHLIN/ MECHLING/ MACKLIN family and your desire to use the picture. You, or others interested in her family lines, may contact her by mail. Her address is: Margaret Schreiner 12966 E. Co. Rd. 32 Bellevue, OH 44811 Good luck with the family research. Don Rogier
Hi Tom, Here are the brief obituaries for Philip Burtscher and his wife. Since they were buried in the St. Wendelin Cemetery in Fostoria, they would not appear in the Seneca County Cemetery Inscriptions book, even if there are tombstones. While most of the city of Fostoria is in Seneca County, the cemetery is located across the county line in Hancock County. I will check for them in the St. Wendelin Cemetery listings when I have a chance and let you know if I find them. The Seneca Advertiser, Tiffin, Ohio, Tuesday, May 3, 1895, 5:4 "Philip Burtscher died in Fostoria Saturday aged seventy-two. He was one of the pioneers of Seneca county, settling near Tiffin in 1845, and coming from St. Wendelin, Prussia. He leaves six sons and three daughters. The funeral takes place at St. Wendelin's Catholic church Wednesday." Tiffin Daily Tribune, Tiffin, Ohio, Thursday, January 8, 1891, 4:5 DIED BURTSCHER- At the family residence, one and one-half miles south of Fostoria, Jan. 6, 1891, Mrs. Philip Burtscher, aged 52 years. {This notice also appeared in The Seneca Advertiser, Tiffin, Ohio, Friday, January 9, 1891, 3:5, with this additional information: Death was due to kidney trouble, and the funeral was January 9 at 10 o'clock at the Fostoria Catholic church.} - ---------------------------- There are longer obituaries for Nicholas Burtscher and Susan (Bair) Burtscher, his wife, in the Fostoria Daily Review. This Nicholas is not the son of Philip, but he may be the N. Burtscher you mentioned in your 10/29/00 posting on OHIO FOOTSTEPS. He was born in Prussia on December 6, 1838, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Burtscher. I don't have time to type the full obituaries of Nicholas and Susan today, but will do so soon. Please feel free to prod me with a reminder if you do not get these obituaries in the next two weeks. I hope this is helpful. Don Rogier

Would appreciate very much if anyone can do a cemetery look up for Barney Spears who was from Reedstown. Thanks in advance. Dottie Rogers Stephenson
Kris and Don Rogier, my thanks to both of you for the Cemetery Lookups re. BURTSCHER. Don, I will be interested in hearing what you do have. Even a very little is more than I presently have. If they were not buried there, I'll have to search elsewhere. Philip BURTSCHER owned farmland in Loudon Twp. according to the 1874 map. I guess my next try will be finding if he sold this land. You both have been of help. Tom Burtscher

I am interested to know if anyone in Seneca Co. Especially the Fostoria area would know anything about the John B. Caldwell family of Fostoria in the 1860 census. He and his wife Mary (?) were born in Pennsylvania and had children; Catherine, William, Joseph, and Mary Jane. Mary Jane married Joshua Harrison Keckler (Harry) in Seneca Co. Feb. 27, 1876. I don't know any thing after that. Leona Comstock
Hi Tom, Regarding a cemetery lookup for Philip or Margaret Burtscher, Seneca Co, Loudon Twp. They are not listed in the Seneca County Cemetery Inscriptions book. I also saw your request for information on this family on the Ohio Footsteps list about a week ago, and I did look up some obituaries. There's not much information, but I will post what I found for you, hopefully tomorrow. Don Rogier

Greetings, All, In the last OGS Chp., SENECA SEARCHERS (Sept/Oct 2000) publication, page 72, there's a picture entitled: BUTCHERING DAY shared by Margaret EBERHART SCHREINER. If Margaret reads this list, or anyone knows her, please write me, at: [email protected] Some of the identified persons in this picture are MACKLINGs. I'm interested in knowing more about who this family is, and if/how they tie into our MECHLIN/ MECHLING/ MACKLIN, etc... family genealogy. Also, I'd like to use copy of this picture to put in our M/M/M-MHA newsletter, and seek permission (and, a better copy). Will be extremely happy to correspond with anyone interested in this family (and/or surname). Best, Caral MECHLING BENNETT, editor MECHLING Historical Assn.
