Ah, Kris, have you seen the state-of-the-art hand held scanners? Zip down one side of the page, up the other, aligns it perfectly. Oh what we have to look forward to. Where were all these things when us oldsters needed them? Keep up the good work. Carol
Michele, Some of the best information we have found on the Dicken Wagon Train is information on FamilyHistory.com posted by James Peirce. Go to the Dicken surname message board and July 2000 time frame for several msgs. on the subject. I am a descendent of Nathan's brother, Charles who settled on land originally bought by their father Jonathan H. Dicken in 1832 in Liberty Township. I have very little information on Nathan, but James Peirce, also a descendent of Charles with a Great-Grand Father by the name of Nathan Eugene Dicken, may also be a good source. His last known e-mail address was [email protected] If you are interested in exchanging other Dicken family information, let me know. Hello. I am looking for information on my husband's family. We have been told his Dicken family came to Seneca Co from Bedford Co, PA in 1837. Nathaniel Dicken was the hunter on a wagon train that was formed of the Dicken, Fletcher and Wilson families. Does anyone have any information on this wagon train? Thank you, Michele __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Photos - Share your holiday photos online! http://photos.yahoo.com/

Also that he entered for Officer Training School and was discharged as a private. I'd say SOMETHING unusual happened. Remember they used to call newly-trained officers "90-day wonders." That would imply to me that he was an officer for just about three weeks before being discharged as a private (assuming he didn't wash out of OTS -- but that usually meant an immediate discharge back then.) Have you tried checking for military records that might be available for him? Sally TWEED BAUGHN [email protected]
I've decided to start working on one of my New Year's resolutions. This will be the year I find out what happened to my great-uncle Mark Harry Shank. Mark was born on Jan. 1, 1892 in Attica. But in the birth records book at the Probate Court in Tiffin the name is listed as Harry W. Shank - I know it's the same person, don't when or reason for the name change. He is listed as Mark Harry in a bio of his father in "A Centennial History of Seneca County Ohio" published in 1902. The only other info about him I have is the following and a family story. First the facts, SHANK, MARK H., NA Tiffin, O. Aug 8/18. Br Attica, O. Jan 1/1892. 4163108, White, MG OTS Cp Hancock Ga to disch. Pvt. Hon disch R. F. D. 4, Nov 30/18 Attica, O. When his father died in 1940, Mark Harry was not mentioned in his obit. I asked a local genealogist (local to me in Texas) where I should go with this she said to check the local papers. If the family story was true it was probably reported even if it happened at some Army base. Any one have any ideas? I would really like to find out what happened to him. Seasons Greetings from The Seneca Hartzell History Links! May the joy and peace of the holy season be with you and yours throughout the coming year. Below are some glimpses of Seneca County Christmas Past. The simple messages of many Christmas's ago can still apply today. Perhaps our lives in these modern times are more complicated than they really need to be. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 1842 - Charles Dickens Visits Tiffin The Atlantic Monthly of November, 1870 contained the following account of a visit to Tiffin by the famous author of "A Christmas Carol". The article was written by Dicken's secretary. "Our stage - coach ride across Ohio ended at Tiffin, a small town which we reached about noon, from whence was a railroad to Sandusky City on Lake Erie. The good landlord at Tiffin, finding who were his guests, did his best to please, and also to let the entire town know that "Dickens was at his hotel" And when we left the house for the depot he had a large kind of open wagon on springs, with seats very high, on which Mr. and Mrs. Dickens were perched. I think the driver was instructed to pass through all the principal streets of the place before he reached the railroad station, for we went at a slow pace and were a long time going; and the people awaited us in groups, as if by appointment, at the street-corners and at the windows and doors of the houses; and if the inhabitants of Tiffin, Ohio, did not on that occasion see "Boz" and his wife, it certainly was not the fault of that good landlord or of his carriage-driver." >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 1850 - Sleighing In December >From the Seneca Advertiser of December 13, 1850 "We were visited with a fall of snow on Friday night and Saturday, which has afforded fine sleighing during the present week. The merry ringing of bells in our streets as we write, tell us that our citizens generally are enjoying it." >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> January 13, 1892 "Your letter of thanks at hand. I am more than pleased to know the children were happy, that is what Xmas is for and I was also glad you wrote about your Xmas and glad you had a tree for them. While they are small let them have a good time if possible, and even if (it costs) a little more than you can afford. It is much better than to give them more money when you are gone, (instead of) a dull cheerless house to remember all their life. I only wish I could have sent more..." Quoted from a letter from my collection written by Jesse Stoner to his brother's family in Green Springs, Ohio - --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- January 16, 1895 "I fully believe Xmas intended for children and as it takes so very little to make them happy, I think there is no time in life they can get as much enjoyment out of it as when small. If more people would only confine the Xmas to children and not make it a tax as they so often do, in trying to see how much better things they can give than receive, it would make a very happy time of year instead of a trial and bore as it often is." "I am afraid on our side of the house we all take life much too seriously. We only have one life to live and there ought to be more enjoyment gotten out of it." Quoted from a letter from my collection written by Jesse Stoner to his brother's family in Green Springs, Ohio ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- December 29, 1907 "We had a tree for the children and they string popcorn and put it on the tree. I wish you could (have) seen them in (the) morning, how glad they were. I will tell you what the children got. Ivan got a sled, book, checkers, hose, goods for an overshirt, candy, orange, peanuts and niggertoes. Anita got a dolly buggy, jack in the box, tiddledy winks, hose, under shirts, gingharm for aprons, plate, white ribbon, candy, book, orange, peanuts and niggertoes. Sam gave me a ring for my present. I gave Sam a dollar for his present. Ivan's teacher gave him candy and orange." Quoted from a letter from my collection written by Ella to her sister Mrs. William (Sarah) Stahl in Attica, Ohio -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1938 - Christmas - "Community Santa" Sends Gifts to over 600 Poor Children In a remarkable undertaking amidst a depressed economy, volunteers brightened the holidays of over 600 poor children who would have otherwise been overlooked. Donations of new and used toys were taken from throughout the city by the Boy Rangers. The toys were repaired and refurbished to the point where it was difficult to tell the new from the repaired. On Christmas Eve, about 14 truckloads of these toys were loaded and distributed to the underpriveledged of Tiffin by the Boy Rangers of Tiffin and their adult volunteers. As further evidence of the generousity of Tiffin people in these hard times, the Salvation Army distributed Christmas dinners to over 60 families. At the Tiffin Theater, a Christmas Theater Party was held for 500 children. At the County Jail, Mrs. Verne F. Deats, wife of the sheriff, arrainged for a Christmas dinner for the prisoners. The dinner included chicken and mince pie. Mr. and Mrs. Deats had just celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary 2 days prior. At the County Infirmary, matron Mrs. C. L. Good prepared a dinner for the elderly, destitute and infirm residents that included chicken and pumpkin pie. At the Jr. Home, Christmas Eve was marked by the annual Santa Claus Parade. Santa Claus, accompanied by "Dad" and Mrs. Kernan, visited each cottage in turn, judging each on their hand made decorations. On Christmas morning, each child awoke to find their presents arrainged under the tree. A special church service for the children was held at 10:00 a. m., and a huge Christmas dinner was served at 2:30. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Although the Jr. Home has been closed for many years now, the Santa Claus Parade is still held annually, in addition to the Downtown Parade. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL! The entire Warner Beers History of Seneca County, Ohio, is posted at Heritage Pursuit. It is entirely in text on html pages. I would advise you to go to each section & save it all to your computer, as it may not be there for long, or may become a pay site. Here is a link directly to Warner Beers. http://heritagepursuit.com/SenIndex.htm The entire volume only amounts to just over 3 megabytes, and will fit on 3 floppys if you would rather not keep it on your hard drive. I paid almost $60 for the 2 volume reprint. This is free, and includes everything except the statistics section and the index! The home page is at http://heritagepursuit.com Also included at this site are histories of Ohio, as well as Wyandot, Crawford, Marion, Delaware, Hardin, Morrow and Union counties in Ohio, as well as other helpful resources. Hi, I am new to this list. Sometime before the Civel War my greatgrandfather THOMAS FLEMING STAUFFER ran an orphanage for the Reformed Church in Fastoria, Ohio. When the civel War started he went to Reformed Church Seminary in Latrobe, Pa where he stayed until the end of the war. I am trying to find out anything on the other parts of his life. Aloha Joe
Kris, I don't have any problems getting into zing.com, and since that's where the photos are most likely going to end up...why don't you just go ahead and scan them in there? It would probably be the easiest...I know you are a very busy Lady!!! Take care, Vickie
Yes I will scan them and send them to you... or I can post them at a zing website. I gotta scan them in to go either way... do you get into the zing.com website ok? some folks have problems if they have a slow puter... I am not sure which are sendelbachs..or brickners...or baldauf... but one was a brickner and one a baldauf that looked so far, both guess there must be sendelbachs in the pile... Thanks for writing! -KRis my NEW webpage: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ohio/links2.shtml _______________________________________________________ Send a cool gift with your E-Card http://www.bluemountain.com/giftcenter/
my question: Does anyone here know the OLD Brickner/Baldauf/Sendelbach families of VanWert/ Seneca counties? as you all know I took a four day weekend and went to Van Wert county to work on these allied families. There I acquired 50-75 "unidentified" old photos from my grand aunts hope chest. I have taken them to two families so far and some were "named" whew! but still have a pile I need help on. Please email me if you think you can help. Hi Kris. My mom will be here for the holidays sometime next week. She would probably be able to help identify some of the Sendelbach photos that you have. How do you want to go about it? Can you scan and send them to me? Let me know. Thanks, Vickie
This bounced to me due to not being written in plain text. Sounds like Kris had a very fruitful trip. Alice USGenWeb CC for Seneca Co. Does someone have this database close at hand? I am trying to trace a WEATHERLY in Ohio. He died in Buffalo, NY, but his burial crypt was in Cleveland, Ohio. He had about 7 children, I believe, and wound up burying them all, apparently. Yet, I do not know that that was before one or two may have married and had family. There are a small handful of WEATHERLYs listed in the state. I am hoping to find the connection to Joseph L. Weatherly, who died in 1866. Thanks, Vince Summers
