Since Portsmouth is on the Ohio River, your ancestors may have travelled by stagecoach, wagon, horse, or by foot from NY to Philadelphia, to the Ohio River, then taken a boat of some sort downriver to Portsmouth. See all of the links in this email for maps of major migration routes from NY to Portsmouth, OH This site has info about many migration routes. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gentutor/trails.html The "Great Valley Road" went West from Philadelphia, then turned South somewhere West of Philadelphia, and continued down through the Shenandoah Valley. The Great Valley Road is now known as I-81. http://sc_tories.tripod.com/map_of_the_great_philadelphia_wagon_road.htm http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gentutor/valley.html Staunton, VA is in the Shenandoah Valley, and folks could travel the Staunton, VA - Parkersburg, VA Turnpike to the Ohio River. Parkersburg is on the Ohio River. http://www.spturnpike.org/ Many of the Interstates we use today were old migration routes. Of course, some are not, but those are exceptions. Look for ways you'd drive from NY to Portsmouth, OH, then look for old migration routes which follow those Interstates.
