Transcribed without making changes to spelling and grammar. Transcribed by Joyce Robinson The Portsmouth Times Dated: September 18, 1880 DEATH OF HON. ELIJAH GLOVER Hon. Elijah Glover, one of our most prominent citizens, breathed his last at his residence, in the Fifth Ward, yesterday morning at 4 o'clock, aged sixty nine years. His health had been precarious for a long time, pre- venting him giving any attention to business. For some time his mind had been somewhat impaired, resulting no doubt from injuries received upon the head many years ago, when waylaid at night upon our streets by foot-pads. He always attributed the inroads made upon his health to the blow then received. Mr. Glover was a historic character in this locality, and has filled many public positions. He was born in Portsmouth, May 11th, 1811, over sixty- nine years ago, and was perhaps the oldest citizen born within its limits. In early life he was educated to the printing profession, and for many years was engaged in publishing newspapers in this city, and for six years was the editor and publisher of the Portsmouth Courier. He afterward studied law and adopted the legal profession. He was elected Auditor of Scioto county in 1840, and served for six years in that position. In 1853 he was a candidate for State Senator in this district, but failed of election. He was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1863 and 1865, the latter term acting as Chairman of the Finance Committee. In 1869 he was again returned to the House, serving one term --his last appearance in public life. Mr. Glover was a fluent talker and ready debater, and was possessed of a commendable public spirit. His many friends, not only in this vicinity, but throughout the State, will hear of his death with sorrow. The funeral will take place to-morrow (Sunday) at three o'clock, from Christ Church, on Third street, to which the friends of the deceased are invited.
