Thought that others who had ancestors in Portsmouth might like to know about it. I have no financial interest in the site...just a happy customer, sharing sources with you. 2. Jenny Stork & Rob Cook
    3. I was wondering if anyone who has any Porter Township cemetary books could do a lookup for me? I have a relative named Amariah Randall (Randle) who is alive in 1850 then gone by 1860. Not sure if Wheelersburg cemetary is in Porter township. Would love some help with the Randall surname in Scioto county cemetary's. I have also a Lazarus gone by 1840, Peter Randall also gone by 1840. I would appreciate any help. Jenny Seattle

    2. Linda Trent
    3. Hi Herma, Yes, I have a copy of her death certificate that was filled out by my uncle, and he said Springfield. But again, he probably heard her say that, and I'm back to square one. :-) I know that the state required birth records to be kept from 1867 on up (though I'm aware that not every person was recorded, and there were fires and floods and such that may have destroyed them), is there any chance that anyone will be where they can glance for William O. Hixon and Laura Ellen "Ella" Rice Hixon having a daughter Bessie Mae Hixon on or around May 16, 1901? I would be happy to donate a small sum for the effort. Like I said, if this proves fruitless then I'll give up and assume that somehow they went up to Clark County, but I just can't give up without one last search. Thanks, Linda Trent lindatrent@zoomnet.net > Linda, > > Have you checked her death certificate? D.C.'s aren't always correct, but > sometimes you get lucky. 3. Linda, Have you checked her death certificate? D.C.'s aren't always correct, but sometimes you get lucky. It depends on the knowledge of the informant and whether they were thinking straight when they gave the info. Maybe Bessie didn't know precisely where she was born so she just said Clark Co. on the marriage license application figuring it wasn't going to matter. Herma

    1. [OHSCIOTO] My genealogical puzzle. Looking for Bessie M. Hixon's birthplace
    2. Linda Trent
    3. A cousin just sent me a copy of the Portsmouth Times Sept. 20, 1902 that has a social article about my gg grandmother (and grandfather, I presume) living in Portsmouth. "Mrs. Delilah Rice of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is in the city, the guest of her niece, Mrs. Charles Rice..." This has me back on my mission. A mission I've been on for nearly 25 years. I want to prove one way or another my theory that my grandmother was NOT born in Clark County as her marriage record states. It is my belief that she was born in either Lawrence or Scioto, with Scioto being my favorite choice. Here's my puzzle. Bessie Mae Hixon was the minor daughter of William O. Hixon and Ella Rice (Wm was required to sign the marriage certificate). She was born May 16, 1901, and married Walton S. Tope on Apr. 16, 1919 in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio. I know for a fact she was married in Springfield, but where was she born? Her marriage record states Springfield Twp., Clark County, Ohio, but there is no birth record for Bessie in Clark County. It gets more interesting. Bessie's parents show up in the 1900 census, which was enumerated on June 18, 1900, in Bloom Twp., Scioto county, as the Hickson family. Bessie is born May 16, 1901 and then her mother died in Waterloo, Symmes Twp., Lawrence County Oct. 12, 1902. There's hardly time in there to get up to Springfield (just north of I-70) to have Bessie, and then get back to Lawrence County. I've checked the Lawrence County records and couldn't find a birth record for Bessie, but I've not checked the Scioto County records. So, by now I'm sure you're wondering why would she assume Clark County? Good question. When Bessie's mother died, her father didn't think he could raise a young lady, so he sent her to Springfield to live with her Aunt and Uncle Hattie Hixon and William Wright. Since Bessie was old enough to remember she always lived in Springfield. Her father remarried shortly thereafter, this time to Gerilda Brown, d/o Nathaniel and Martha Murray Brown (according to "So This Is Waterloo"). By 1920 they are living in Springfield, Ward 2, Clark County, Ohio the same with 1930. William died in 1939 in Ironton, Lawrence County. Did he send Bessie to her aunt at such an early age that he forgot that she was really born in southern Ohio? Did the family really go to Clark County where she was born and scurry back to Lawrence within a year. Did they just go up to visit and Bessie was born while they were traveling (thus no birth record because they didn't stay anywhere long enough). But on the other hand, travel was much more difficult especially for pregnant women, and newborn infants, would they travel knowing that her due date is nigh at hand? Was the sister a midwife, and if so wouldn't she come home to Gallia/Lawrence to deliver her sister-in-law's baby instead of having her sister-in-law travel to her? Ah, a true genealogist's puzzle. :-) If anyone can help, give leads, or anything else, please let me know. This has been bothering me for a lot of years and I'd love to finally put this to rest. If I can't find anything I'll just have to agree with the marriage record regardless how little sense it makes to me. Thanks to all, Linda Trent lindatrent@zoomnet.net Gallia County

    1. [OHSCIOTO] Dellsena
    2. Paul Sabol
    3. I'm trying to hunt down info on my g-grandmother. Her name at death was Dellsena Williams, wife of Samuel Elias Williams. She died in 1926 in McAndrews, Pike Co, KY. Before marriage, she was Dellsena Denny living in Jackson County, OH. Based on dates, I think the man listed as her father (Jacob Denny) was her step-father. I suspect the Denny name was given to Dellsena after he married her mother. I was looking over her death certificate and it listed her mother as Elizabeth Perry (may also be Parry) and Stev Smith. I'm thinking this name might be Steve Smith. It listed her date of birth as July 19, 1893 in Ohio. Since I'm not sure exactly where in Ohio she was born, I was going to try and check out all the counties surrounding Jackson in search of a birth record. Is there anyone going to the Scioto County, OH probate court who might be able to do a lookup for me to see if a daughter was born on this date to Elizabeth and Stev (or some variation thereof)? I suspect they were not married at the time of Dellsena's birth. Not sure if they ever got married at all. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Yahoo! I have no documentation for Anna. In 1830, Kanawha Co., VA, William Farney is listed right after Thomas Foster, who I show as Anna's father. In 1840, Kanawha Co., Elizabeth Farney is listed as head of household, right after Noah Foster, who would be Anna's brother. Makes me wonder if Anna and Elizabeth are actually the same person. In 1850, Elizabeth Roe is listed in Sciotoville, Scioto Co., OH. She is once again H of HH. Children are listed as, Marcus Farney, Jane, Amanda and Van Buren Farney and Vernon Roe. The last time I find Elizabeth is 1860, Porter Twp, Scioto Co. Van Buren Farney is hh, then Elizabeth and Vernon Roe. I'm wondering if anyone can help with documentation, family stories, etc?
