In 1860 the ferry was owned and operated by Alexander K. Thompson and his wife Nancy D. (Bagby) Thompson and their son, Robert B. Thompson. In 1864, they sold the ferry operation to John McAllister and his wife, Catherine S. (Bagby) McAllister, a niece of Nancy (Bagby) Thompson. Other than these simple facts, I know little else about the ferry. Would like to know the years of operation, other owners, and any other facts. To the List: Most of our ancestors came to Ohio from further east, many from Massachusetts in colonial days. I have acquired the following reference material that was very helpful to me in identifying some of my early people and I am willing to do lookups. There are a few for Connecticut, as well. The source is called "Notes from 'Planters of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, 1620-1640,'" by Charles Edwards Banks. The names are alphabetized by last name, head of family first. Some contain more information than others, but I found many gems. The information tells to what town in the colonies the immigrants were going, and usually where they were from in England. The time frame is limited, only 1620 to 1640, but there is some information I have not found elsewhere. Example: Marvin, Matthew, age 45, Hartford, CT, arrived 1635 on "Increase," from Bentley Magna, Essexshire Marvin, Mrs. Elizabeth, age 31, Hartford, CT, arrived 1635 on "Increase." Marvin, Matthew Jr., age 8, Hartford, CT, arrived 1635 on "Increase. Marvin, Mary, age 6 " " " Marvin, Sarah, age 3, " " " " Marvin, Hannah, age 6 months, " " " " Kathy Gire, Granite Bay, California email: _Kabumpo16@aol.com_ (mailto:Kabumpo16@aol.com) Researching in Scioto County: COLE, HAYWARD, ORM(E), HUSTON **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? The next time someone makes a run to the records room at the courthouse, could you check one thing for me? I have seen only one reference to the marriage of my Samuel Slack and that was to a Ruth Zaires on 28 SEP 1849 in Scioto County, Ohio. Would it be possible for someone to check this for me and make sure that Ruth's last name was, in fact, Zaires? She was supposed to have been born in Kentucky about 1818, but I can find no trace of this surname. I am trying to locate her correct maiden name, but of course, even Zaires may not be her maiden name, as she was about 31 years old when she married Samuel Slack and may have been a widow. Would like to hear from anyone connected with this Slack line. Supposedly, Samuel's parents were Uriah Slack and Sarah Bedford. Can anyone corroborate this? Thank you. My Scioto lines are Slack, Custer, Kennedy and Jewett. Mike Radcliff Milton, Cabell County, West Virginia

I am tracking my Faessler Ancestors who came to Scioto County about 1850. The name now has become Fessler but at that time Faessler would be written Fässler and easily mistaken as Fassler. This individual could be Johan Michael Faessler, who in 1851, married Maria Walter. I would appreciate it if some one would check the Census and give me details of the listing. They came from Scherzhiem, Baden. I dont recall the exact Ward but there is Heid listing in the 1880 Census for Portsmouth. In the mid 1800's a number of immigrants from Scherzhiem came to or passed through Portstmouth including Barbara Faessler who maried Friedrich Walter and settled in Portsmouth. I suggest you check the LDS records for Scherzheim which is just off the Rhine River about 15-20 Km. north of Strasbourg, France.Failing in that, try Lichtenau located about 2 KM. to the north. He had suffered from the disease for many years. He was 69 years old and leaves several children. The remains will be buried from the German Catholic church, Saturday morning, at 9 o'clock, and will be interred in the church cemetery. Portsmouth Daily Times Saturday, 21 April, 1917 MRS. KATHERINE HEID The city lost another of its pioneer and most highly regarded residents when Mrs. Katherine Heid, aged 86, passed peacefully away Friday evening at 5:45 o'clock, her death taking place at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joseph Frantz of 601 Market street. Death was caused by infirmities. Mrs. Heid was the widow of the late Charles Heid, who died 22 years ago. She is survived by the following children: Charles of this city, Joseph of Colorado Springs, Colo., George of Nebraska, Henry of Iowa, Mrs. John Welty of Sixth street, Mrs. William Jackson of Indiana, Mrs. Joseph Frantz, this city, Mrs. Frank Montavon of the West Side and Miss Theresa Heid of this city. Mrs. Heid was a most estimable woman, kind and charitable and she will be missed. She was always ready to help those in need and was a woman who lived for her children, her happiest moments coming when she was surrounded by them. The funeral services will be conducted from the St. Mary's church Monday morning at 8:30 o'clock. Portsmouth Times Monday, 23 April, 1917 FUNERAL MONDAY Funeral services of the late Mrs. Katherine Heid were conducted from the St. Mary's church at 8:30 Monday morning by Rev. Father T. A. Goebel. Charles Heid was b. in 1826 in Baden, according to the 1880 census & Catharine Harter Heid was b. in 1831, also in Baden. Charles last appeared in a census in 1880. Catharine was found in 1900, still living in Clay Twp., Scioto Co. with daughter Grace or Gracia. In 1910, she & daughter Theresa were living in Portsmouth, Wayne Twp. She was shown as 81 years. In the Ohio Death Records beginning in 1913, I found a Catheri Heid living until 1918 & dying in Montgomery Co. Are there Catholic church records in Clay Twp., Scioto County & is there anyway to contact someone to do a search of these records?
