As the OGS Trustee who works with the chapters in Athens, Gallia, Jackson, Lawrence, Meigs, Pike, Ross, Scioto, and Vinton Counties, I invite any of you who are planning to attend the annual conference this weekend. to introduce yourselves. Because the Ohio Genealogical Society is celebrating it's 50th year, we are starting the conference with a special banquet on Thursday evening with a great speaker. Friday and Saturday will be full of classes with seven different tracks available for each time slot. There will be something for everyone, no matter how much or little experience you have. Walk in registrations are welcome, but if you would want to attend any of the luncheons or banquets you would need to contact the OGS office in Mansfield as soon as possible. Once the conference starts there are a very limited number of meal tickets available. This conference is being held at the Sawmill Creek Resort in Huron, OH. This is about 15 minutes from Cedar Point Amusement Park. There are no rooms available at the resort hotel, but there are several hotel/motels nearby. I recently obtained an April, 1881 letter written by a John Dodds of Mt. Joy, Ohio to his brother W. H. Dodds in New Wilmington, PA. In this letter John writes of the goings on in Mt. Joy, including a late snowstorm, his parents, who among the community is ill, and work being completed on the Mt. Joy church. He also mentions some men from "the Grove" coming to work in the neighborhood; their names were Johnson, Vanmeter, and Copeland. Another from Blue Creek was ((Beatron?) John also spoke of Dr. White being ill with rheumatism and Jerry Shannon sick with measles. The letter was written on both sides of lined paper and is in remarkably good condition. I also have the original envelope which is in more of a fragile condition. I would like to return this letter to family of these Dodds or to the Mt Joy church for their historical records. Variously spelled as Gephart, Gebhart, and Gebhardt. Lewis was born in Wurttemburg Germany abt 1808. Married Temperance (no surname available). Temperance was born in Ohio. They started having children in about 1835. This couple shows up on the 1840, 1850, and 1870 census in Bloom Twp, Scioto Co. The specific location may be indicated by a Gephart road which runs from Scioto Furnace west connecting agin with South Webster Pike. We know of 10 children: Jane A., Christina, Carolina, Julia, Mary N., Fredrick, Louisa, Rebecca Ida, Fannie, and Adell. The number of girls makes it difficult to track the family members through census records. We can track Fredrick and we are descended through Christina. Several members of the family moved to southeastern Kansas. Christina and her husband David Ramsey purchased land with Fredrick in Labette Co.
