    1. [OHSCIOTO] Family of George Stewart
    2. Griesan, Tom
    3. Hi again. I guess I should do this the right way. Here's the information that I've gathered about George Stewart. I'd like to fill in the holes about his children, if possible. I have lots of information on John Chilton Stewart, who lived in Lawrence County for all of his days, and would be happy to share what I have. Can someone check the 1820 census for George, likely Green Township of Scioto County? Thanks for the help. - Jean Griesan George Stewart George Stewart was born on May 10, 1758 in Frederick County, Virginia. He was the son of James and Elizabeth Stewart. George served in the army during the Revolutionary War. He married Elizabeth Cranshaw in Uniontown, Pennsylvania. George and Elizabeth were one of the earliest settlers in the area that was to become Lawrence County, Ohio. In the fall of 1796, George and his family settled on the river bank. After that, he moved back to the foot of the hill, a little above the French Grant, and cleared a few acres. In mid to late 1798, there were only six cabins in the whole Lawrence County area. George Stewart and his family lived in one of those cabins. After living there a few years, he bought a lot in the French Grant on Gennet's Creek and moved over there. I think that this area is now Green Township of Scioto County. George and Elizabeth had the following children: Anna, who married David Adkins in Scioto County, Ohio in 1814; Stephen, born in 1793 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, who married Caroline Duduit in Scioto County, Ohio in 1815; Delilah, who married Rueben Kelly; Elizabeth, who married William Kimball in Scioto County, Ohio in 1817; John Chilton, born on August 7, 1800 in Scioto County, Ohio, who married Sarah McCartney in Lawrence County, Ohio in 1820; Amos, born in 1802 in Scioto County, Ohio, who married Dorcas Baccus in Scioto County, Ohio in 1825; Joel, born on December 7, 1803 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, who married Sarah Thurston in 1824; Uriah; and Mary, who married Manley Thomas in Scioto County, Ohio in 1823. George doesn't appear on the 1818 Tax List, the 1820 census, or the 1821 Tax List for Lawrence County, so he possibly left the area, or possibly he is listed in Scioto County. By 1830, George had left Ohio with one of his youngest sons, Amos, and his family. They migrated to Greene County, Illinois. It is believed that George died in late 1850, but the date and location are unknown.

    1. [OHSCIOTO] Cornerstone United Methodist Ch, Portsmouth, OH - HELP!
    2. Karen Hangsleben
    3. On June 17, 2002, I posted a query asking for help in locating the religious affiliation of a JF Williams circa 1862. He was the minister in Portsmouth, OH. I didn't hear a reply from anyone on the list. I also wrote the Portsmouth library and the archives there furnished me with a history of Spencer Chapel Methodist Episcopal Ch. I wrote to what is now called CORNERSTONE UMC and received a disheartening reply in yesterday's mail. They have few records from this timeperiod and no staff to look for me in what remains. I'm looking for perhaps a member of this church and also a person interested in genealogy ( at least sympathetic) who could look on my behalf. Rev. Dillon Staas tells me that the records can be used by appointment. If there is any list member who lives in Portsmouth or nearby who is a member or would be willing to make inroads for me - please email me privately. I'm looking for anything recorded under the NELSON surname from those early records. Thanks, Karen Nelson Hangsleben in TX ----------
