    1. Melvin DAVIS death -- 16 May 1932
    2. G. E. Sonny Vaughn
    3. Posted the stories below to the Floyd and Knott County, KY lists yesterday and also to the Davis surname list. Received a response that I should also consider Otway, Scioto County, Ohio as a good candidate for possible help. The daughters of "Wint" Davis (Jacob Winton) first told me the story of their Dad's move from Harlan, KY to Tackett Creek, TN back in the 1960s. They weren't able to remember many of the details and their older brothers were unable to provide details that would help. All did remember that Wint's Uncle Willy and his son Melvin helped with the move, and that Melvin died in a car wreck a month to six weeks after the move. They also remembered that Uncle Willy lived in Ottawa, OH and that they made the move to TN in late March or early April of 1932. They also remembered that Uncle Willy had to get back to Ohio to get the spring planting done. They thought that Uncle Willy had a couple of girls younger than Melvin, but weren't really sure about that. Last summer on a visit to a relative in northern Ohio, I took a detour to Ottawa in hopes of finding something about the family in the public records or the local library. Nothing. The librarian spent a couple of hours helping me search what they had. During the fall I found an entry in the KY CD-ROM that sounded as if it might be Melvin and during another visit to Ohio got the Death Certificate for Melvin while in Frankfort, KY. >From information in the Death Certificate both of the ladies were sure that this was the same Melvin Davis that was the son of their great-uncle Willy Davis. Last week, I took a trip through Prestonburg, KY and located the newspaper article below. Melvin Davis Dies in Motor Accident Companion Hurt As Car Wrecks Near Dinwood Monday Afternoon __________ (Special to The Times) Hueyville, Ky., May 17. -- Melvin Davis, 19 year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Davis, former citizens of West Garrett, near here, but now of Autway, Ohio, was instantly killed near Dinwood yesterday afternoon when the car in which he was riding left the road and plunged over a small embankment. Archie Patton, of this place, driver of the car, suffered a broken arm and numerous bruises. Other occupants of the car escaped injury. The car became unmanageable, it is said, when a rear wheel broke down, causing the machine to veer toward the upper side of the road despite the efforts of the driver to keep it from doing so. When the machine left the road it somersaulted, killing young Davis during the turn by crushing on side of his chest and severing the jugular vein. Patton's arm was broken when he was hurled from the machine onto the ground. The body of the deceased was brought here last night last night to the home of his uncle, Willie Patton, where it will be held until his parents arrive from Ohio and decide on the place of burial. The parents are expected to reach this place by 10 o'clock this morning, as they are traveling by automobile. The deceased youth is survived by his parents, three brothers, Edgill and Mitchell Davis, of this place, and Marcus of Autway, Ohio; and by three sisters, Melcie, Elsie and Alma, all of Autway. Burial will probably be made in the Allen cemetery, a short distance up Salt Lick Creek from this place, as relatives of the deceased are buried there. G. D. Ryan of Martin will direct the funeral and burial. The above article was transcribed by G. E. "Sonny" Vaughn from a microfilm copy of page 3 in the May 20, 1932 edition of the "Floyd Times." Jacob Winton "Wint" Davis (my grandfather) was the son of Thomas Asa Davis and Sarah Ann Cook. Thomas Asa and William M. "Willy" were the sons of Esau/Asa Davis and Ursula Davis/Inman/Riddell. Melvin's Death Certificate shows that burial was on the 18th of May 1932 in Garrett, KY. The residence of William is listed as Route Two, Otway, Ohio. Father is William Davis; Birthplace: Handshoe, Floyd Co., KY: Mother is Sallie Patton; Birthplace: Hueyville, Floyd Co., KY. You can see the older information that I have on this family by visiting my website. The URL is: www.s-vaughn.com at the bottom of the page click on the "Kinfolks" button. At the bottom of the following page click on the "Continue" link which will then take to the "Kinfolks" home page. Once there click on "Davis Kin" button. At the bottom of each page within the site is a set of navigation buttons which take allow you to easily move from page to page. Would like to hear from anyone with information to share about any of these families. Sonny Vaughn

    2. Hello all, New to the list and wanted to post my surnames: FARRIS IRELAN(D) LEACH HUTCHISON CURRY STEVENS theres porbably more but Im at a loss right now. On my STEVENS line, Im looking for Mary Ellen Stevens' family, she was born about 1849+/-, married William G FARRIS, I thought I had their marriage record but cant seem to find any of them so I dont know her father mother marriage date or anything, William and Mary had 3 children that I know of: Henry Farris b ?? John Ailee Farris b 1871 and a female who married T.J. Hoffer. I beleive her name to be Agnes but dont have anything to back that up for sure, I think I came to that conclusion from a census somewhere, Im so unorganized!!! But anywho I found, Henry FARRIS in 1910 census (Scioto Co) with wife Cora (who may or may not be Cora HOFFS) with 3 children. I dont know if this is my Henry or not, but its a shot, Then I found Henry in an 1880 (either Meigs, Adams Co, Ohio or Adams, Meigs Co, Ohio) census living with A???????? Stevens, Elizabeth and 5 children, the writting on this census is very hard to decifer, as grandson, I believe this is correct because Mary was a STEVENS. If anyone can help, I beg, PLEASE help.
