Springville is the area of Greenup County just as you crossed over the U S Grant Bridge from Portsmouth. The road that used to go straight up the hill and curve back to the left is Springville Hill. The entrance to the road has been changed now and it is in pretty bad shape due to hill slides , but there is a beautiful view of Portsmouth and the Ohio River from up there. Hope this helps.
Hello Willis, At www.davidrumsey.com/maps450.html there is a map dated 1877 that shows Springville, Greenup County, KY. It is right on the south bank of the Ohio River, opposite the confluence of the Scioto River and Ohio River. (just slightly west of Portsmouth).I had to enlarge the map several times until it was large enough to read. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, August 01, 2004 2:59 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [OHSCIOTO] Springville, KY Dear friends: I recently discovered some long lost ancestors on the 1860 Federal Census for Greenup Co. Rowena, here is what I found from the book titled "Scioto County Ohio Newspaper Index: Deaths and Marriages, 1818 to 1865" by Barbara Keyser Garguilo: Sarah Wilson died February 28, 1854 age 18. Death Notice date published on March 7th, 1854 in Portsmouth Daily Dispatch (Note: from Sexton's report. A Sexton's report usually was an employee of the church or municipal cemetery. Also note: Obits were not very common during the early to mid-1800's. It was costly to submit one). No Edwin listed. I am told that the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus has copies of these notices. Phyllis > need help in locating the obits of Wilson, >Edwin and his mother Sarah, both died @ 1850-1855 in >Scioto Co >
Hello! My Robert Scott Stewart has been found in the South Webster Cemetery. I found a partial listing (from the Scioto County Rootsweb website) online, but he wasn't included in that. Does anyone know of a more complete listing of the South Webster Cemetery, perhaps in the Scioto County Genealogical Society documentation? What I am looking for is a complete birthdate for Dr. Robert Scott Stewart. Thanks for any help! - Jean Griesan
Carol, My wife's maiden name was Power. Some of the family spell it with an s on the end (Powers). They came from Hocking , Athens or possibly also Meigs County. They may have a connection to Scioto County. I have never researched the Power family. I have been concentrating on Barbers from Scioto County. I'd be interested in anything you have on either. Carol, I agree wholeheartedly.... I've seen too many errors passed on and on because no one verifies the information. I tend to use what I get online as a starting point to find the original documentation. I like the original documentation. Bob, I have some POWERS folks in my family tree. Joseph POWER (Powers) (b. 1725 - d.1794 Loudoun Co, VA) & Sarah Shore (born abt 1726 in MD)----> daughter Mary POWERS (b.1755 Fairfax Co, VA - d.??? Rushville Co, IN) + married John Lewis (b. June 23, 1748 Fairfax Co, VA - d. Feb 17, 1835 Noble Twp, Rush Co, IN) m. about 1772 in Loudoun Co, VA -----> their son Thomas Powers LEWIS (b.1774 Loudon Co, VA - d. 1831 Rush Co, IN) Now before you dismiss this family as not the one you're looking for, note this..... Joseph Powers had 13 children (or more), so one of his children could be your relative. His daughter Mary migrated from VA to IN, I think through KY and the Adams Co area of OH. Mary's son Thomas Powers Lewis migrated from VA to KY to IN. Thomas Powers Lewis had a son, Thomas Gardner Lewis who was born in KY and died in Adams Co, OH. As I've traced my family (the Lewis & Powers families) and other families, I've noticed that they came from VA to KY into Adams Co, OH (adjacent to Scioto Co, OH) then to Rush Co, IN. Not all went to IN and some who went to IN returned to OH. There seems to be a migration path from KY to the Adams Co, OH area then to Rush Co, IN. And usually several members of a family migrated together. So perhaps some your Powers family stayed in the Adams Co, OH area & perhaps some went to Rush Co, IN, as mine did. So there you go....some clues to work with! If you want a list of all of the POWERS children, or more info on the Powers family, please write to me at the email address at the bottom of my message.
