Hi! I am looking for information on Lewis Oliver Lane (sometimes spelled Layne) and his wife, Florence Lane. Oliver was born about 1858 - 1860, the son of William F. Layne and Susan M. (Stewart) Layne. He was born in Lawrence County, Ohio. He had many siblings. The family moved to Boyd County, Kentucky about 1869. I am unsure when Oliver and Florence married, but they are in Portsmouth together in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses. I cannot find them (or him) in the 1900 census. I would like to know if someone can find a death record, an obituary, or a cemetery listing for him and his wife. It is believed that he died sometime between September 1930 and February 1934, based on the obituaries of several of his siblings. I believe that he went by Oliver, but I know that he was listed in at least one of the censuses (as a kid) as Lewis. Thanks for any help! - Jean Griesan Colorado

We are pained to have to announce the death of Col. DENNING, for many years one of our most enterprising business men and a most estimable citizen. ---- He died at St. Louis, on Wednesday evening last of consumption. His remains were brought to this city, where they arrived by the 8,30 train on Saturday evening. They were received at the depot by the Harrison Guards and escorted to his late residence on Fourth street. The funeral took place on Sunday at 3 o'clock P. M., and was attended by the Harrison and Washington Guards, Free Masons, Odd Fellows, Reliance, and Phoenix Fire Companies, the Episcopal Sunday School and a large concourse of Citizens not connected with either of those institutions. It was by far the largest and most imposing funeral procession ever witnessed in this city. The services at the grave were conducted by the Masons and Odd Fellows. Col. Denning was a man of warm heart and generous impulses -- an enterprising citizen and, that noblest work of God, an honest man. He drew around him wherever he went a circle of warm and devoted friends to whom he was in turn earnestly and sincerely attached. -- His loss will be widely and deeply felt. Hi! I am researching John Oscar Griffith, and his wife, Amy (McCartney) Griffith. John was born on February 8, 1823 in Adams County, Ohio, the son of Fredrick and Ruth (Osborn) Griffith. Amy was born on November 13, 1826, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Davidson) McCartney. They were married in Lawrence County, Ohio, where they were both living in 1843. Both of their families were primarily in Lawrence County. They had the following children: Frederick L. Griffith, Susan Griffith, William Wallace Griffith, Naomi Griffith, Sarah Griffith, John J. Griffith, Eliza (Lida) Griffith, and Amy Griffith. John worked in the furnaces of Lawrence County (Centre Furnace for one). The 1880 census shows them to be living in Bloom Township, Scioto County, Ohio. His occupation is listed as "Founderman at Fee," which I suspect is actually a foundryman at a furnace. John died in August of 1899 and Amy died in 1900 after the June 2, 1900 census. I cannot find find a listing for them buried in Lawrence County anywhere. Is there a listing for them buried in Scioto County somewhere? Might there be an obituary listing for either of them in Scioto County? I appreciate any help! Thanks! - Jean Griesan Colorado

GILPEN, United States Attorney General under VAN BUREN, and ex-Mayor of this city, died this morning. DIED Near Somerset, Ohio, January 23,1860, LYDIA C. POORMAN, daughter of Mr. Daniel Poorman, in the 18th year of her age. In November, 1853, when the editor of The Timer was teaching a district school, near Somerset, the young woman, whose death has just been recorded, was one of his pupils. A little girl she was then; but, in all that makes up the deportment of a WOMAN -- in neatness, simplicity, a sobered gayety, and, that unaltered grace which comes of native goodness alone--she had, long before, perfected her lessons. The writer can not recall to mind an instance in which he thought she had merited a reproving word or look. And he does not know that her presence, her example, and her strict fidelity to every task she had to perform, lightened his heart through many a weary day. During the last two years, LYDIA herself had been teaching, and --need it be said? -- with complete success. Who, in her degree, was better fitted for such a field of labor? Who had learnt so well, or had so faithfully practised (sic), what every girl and boy should know? Who was more richly gifted with patience and gentleness, or with the sympathising heart and the ready hand that have power to do all things --- all things, indeed, but the miraculous. And now, just as the glories of womanhood were dawning upon her --- just as the Promise Bow of Hope had given assurance from what she was of what she yet should be --- LYDIA C. POORMAN is called hence, and shall be seen by mortal eyes no more. "The old, old fashion !
