Transcribed without making changes to spelling and grammar. Transcribed by Joyce Robinson (Transcriber's note: I thought this was very unique. I have capitalized all names at the end of this article for easier viewing.) The Portsmouth Times: January 6, 1894 HE SLEEPS The Last Sad Rites are Over After long years of life spent mid the sorrows and pleasures of earth, even after time has whitened the hair, dimmed the eye, and palsied the step, we cling lovingly to our dear one, as the light of this life fades out, but when one upon whom our fond hopes and affections have rested for many years, in the prime of life, with ready but a moment's notice, is stricken down, and torn by the relentless hand of death from father, mother, sister, brother, and a loving wife, their grief must be deep, their home deslate. Though the death of J.OSCAR STANTON was expected for some months past, yet the aching hearts left behind will grieve until time shall assuage its poignancy, though it can never obliterate its memories. As to the merits of the deceased all are familiar. He was intelligent, industrious and generous to a fault. He was loved and respected by the employees of the wheel works and the distillery with whom he came in contact in the discharge of his duties in those institutions. In the different orders of the Holy Redeemer church he was a valued member, he was an active member of the River city B. P. O. E. Up to within a few months, apparently he was enjoying a vigorous manhood, having but recently passed his twenty-eighth birthday. On January 17, 1891, he was married to Miss Emma McKenna, of Newark, O, who with a bright little saon survives him. The sorrowing friends and relatives who took part int he last sad rites, composed on of the largest funeral corteges ever seen in Portsmouth. Among friends and relatives in attendance at the funeral not residents of this city were the following: JOHN KING and P. BURNS, Columbus, Oh; GEO SEWARD, Chillicothe, Oh; M MURRAY, Shawnee, Oh; JOHN O HUGHES, New Straitsville, Oh; JOHN MCKENON, Newark, Oh; RICHARD KIER, Newark, Oh; J SMITH, Washington C. H., Oh; DAN CROSSIN, JOHN CROSSIN, HUGH CROSSIN and son, DAN P COLL, WM FOGARTY, Hon IRVINE DUNGAN and PAT McCLAFFERTY, Jackson, Oh; Hon P F HART and wife, WM HUGHES and wife, Prof JOHN STROBEL, JOHN HANEY, P KILLORAN, JOHN MURPHY, NICK MCMAHON, ED HANNON, J McAVOY, GEO SCHACHLEITER, J I GORMAN, Ironton, Oh; JOHN SWEENEY, Vesuvious, Oh; PAT LOODER, Hanging Rock, Oh; JOHN STANTON and sons: Berlin X-Roads, Oh; WM STANTON, son and daughters, Hamden, Oh; JOHN GANGHAN and sister, Charleston, W Va: JAS P CLARK, Charleston, W Va; JOHN POWERS, Cincinnati, Oh. During sickness a fond father, a loving mother and a devoted wife did all that human hands could do to stay the shadow of death, but all in vain, and in their bereavement they have the sympathy of the entire community.
