Custer and more than 200 federal troops of the 7th Cavalry lost their lives in what became known as the Battle of the Little Bighorn, or Custer's Last Stand. The battle, which took place after the 7th Calvary attacked a large camp of Sioux and Cheyenne Indians, was part of a governmental effort to remove Indian groups from Southern Montana.
