My 3rd great-grandfather was Solomon LINVILLE (LYNVIL, LINVILL), resident of Richland Twp., Fairfield Co., in 1824, when his death was noted by Fairfield Co. Probate Court Case 626 - Estate (no will), filed in 1830. He was a young man when he died, and apparently death was unexpected. Solomon was in the shipping business with his brothers, Joseph (Administrator of his estate), Benjamin, William and Hugh Foster LINVILLE, and possibly Judge SWAYZE. I've been "looking for Solomon LINVILLE" for a long time, and I recently obtained a copy of Case 626 which gave me many clues as to what happened, but not where he died. The claims against the estate were from various parts of Ohio, including Cincinnati, with other claims mentioning work done in "Orleans" (they shipped commodities down the Mississippi to New Orleans). It was an insolvent estate and Solomon's goods were sold and the proceeds covered only direct costs of settling the estate. All of these direct costs had receipts for payment but one - and for that one the man responsible for keeping the accounting only noted in a margin the costs, but it is reasonable to believe these costs were paid, since all the others were. This claim read: "John SEARLS (Sandusky) for Physcians (sic) Bill, Nurse, Coffin, Shroud, Diging (sic) Grave, and Tavern expenses - $40.75". This claim would have been paid in June/July, 1824, since Joseph LINVILLE was appointed administrator of Solomon's estate June 29, 1824. Was John SEARLS known in Sandusky County in 1824? I've been unable to locate where Solomon is buried, or determine the exact cause of death (there was a malarial fever in the Rush Creek area of Fairfield County where Solomon's shipping activity probably took place). Can anyone help me determine what the meaning of "John SEARLS (Sandusky)" is? Apparently he took care of some very personal and vital matters for Solomon LINVILLE, my ancestor. I'd appreciate any information you might have. Thank you in advance - Nancy Thompson (California)
