I checked the website for GAR and it said the name of the Chillicothe Post #162 was Allison Brown. Does that ring a bell with any of you wonderful Ross Co. folks? Just want to make sure before I write it on application papers for a heritage society. Thanks so much. Eve
Hello, I have Ralph E. McNeal born 11 May 1913 in Chillicothe, Ohio. He married Mary E. Mobley. Maybe this McNeal links to your family. Ralph's mother was Edna Mary Smith born 24 Feb. 1898. The marriage was out of wedlock and no father is mentioned on the birth record. Terry Fout in Chillicothe has been helping me with the McNeal mystery. Pat in Oklahoma patpetty@cox.net
Working on the John Ortman family. His father was John Ortman who lived in Perry County. John moved to Ross County ca 1810. He was married to Catherine Baker in Washington Co, MD. Would like to compare notes on this John and his father, John. Ruth
Would like to correspond via email with McNeal, Gates and Crider/Cryder researchers living, or with roots, in Ross Co. I am especially interested in an Elizabeth Crider who was b. abt. 1826 prob. in Ross Co. OH and m. Thomas McNeal´s son Henry H. McNeal of Ross Co. in 1847. While they married in Scott Co. Illinois for reasons unknown, they are living in Ross Co. in 1850, making me think she might actually be a Cryder. Duane Mills Stavanger, Norway
You are probably never going to find an actual vehicle. Most during this time period were sold off for scrap as the material was worth money. Especially during the 1930's depression period. But you can email the Brass-Nickel Touring Region which focuses on cars manufactured prior to 1931. And have antique road shows. They may know if there are any in existence or may lead you to someone that would know. There website is at: http://local.aaca.org/bntc/index.htm and their email address is under the Officer's listing. Author: LoriLittle63 Surnames: BEDTHIJA SMITH HURST YORK Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ohio.counties.ross/1282/mb.ashx Message Board Post: BEDTHIJA BEDTHIJA BEDTHIJA BEDTHIJA BEDTHIJA BEDTHIJA I am posting my info through out different states and counties in hopes that this name has surfaced elsewhere. If anyone out there has any knowledge of this name I would love to hear about it and suggestions are welcome. I am looking for any info on my GGgrandfather whose, I believe due to the info that I have found and has been sent to me, last name is BEDTHIJA. His son, my Ggrandfather Charles Bedthija Smith, was born in Indiana and died in Illinois and Charles daughter-Zetta Ann SMITH YORK, my grandmother, was born in Illinois and died in Illinois. I believe his last name is BEDTHIJA and that he came from Germany and possibly returned to Germany. I am listing all info, and a couple of stories, that I have on his child/children. I have nothing on him. It seems that my Ggrandfather-Charles was kept at a distance with his grandchildren, my mother and aunt does not remember much about him and they were not allowed to visit him even though he lived within visiting range. My mother and aunt said that there mother-Zetta was never told anything about her grandparents-Charles parents. So whats the Hush-Hush all about? 1st Story: My sister remembers our grandmother, Zetta Ann SMITH YORK, telling her about a grandfather, she does not remember if she specified which grandfather, that came from Germany married a Native American (this part I question but she swears that is how she remembers the story) had child/children wife died and the grandfather not being able to speak much English returned to Germany. Marriage Record in Vermillion Co., Indiana: Book 7 page 119 list groom-BERTHIJA, Chalres (exact spelling probably a typo) bride-HURST, Minnie A. date-April 5, 1896. (If this is correct they probably lied on the 1900 census about being married 8 years) Book 7 page 49 list groom-STURM, Harry (probably Minnies first husband and probably Ross (Ross from 1900 census) father) bride-HURST, Minnie A. date-none listed. 1900 U.S. Federal Census, Edgar Co., IL: Line 24/BEDTHIJA, Charles/Head/W M/b. Illinois/fathers birth pl. Indiana/mothers birth pl. Illinois. Changes name to SMITH after 1900 census. (or was using his middle name as last name in 1900 census) 2nd Story: My aunt remembered her mother, Zetta Ann SMITH YORK, my grandmother, telling her that when she was a little girl one day the mailman was questioning her parents about the name/names on the mail and when her parents explained to the mailman he said Just change your name. Divorced after 1900 Census. (I am assuming that he is divorced before he signed the WWI Draft even though it doesnt ask for marital statis he states his closest living is his daughter not spouse.) WWI Draft Registration Card: Signed-Charles Bedthija Smith on Sept. 12, 1918 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Residence-Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana. Birth Date-Oct. 10, 1873, Closest living relative-Zetta York in Edgar Co., Illinois. The only other BEDTHIJA that I have found: WWI Draft Registration Card: Allen Co., Indiana is Henry J BEDTHIJA, born Feb. 3 1895 in Scotland, Illinois (Edgar Co.) Single with no next of kin and states that he has no one solely dependent on him. Death Certificate: Name-Charles Bedthija Smith Place of Death-Paris Hospital, Edgar Co. Illinois Date of Death-May 9, 1944 Birth Date-Oct. 12, 1870(this date is different from the 1900 Census and the WWI Draft, not sure which is correct) Father & Mother-unknown Informant-Jack Smith Place of Burial-Mt. Carmel, Brouiletts Creek Twp., Edgar Co. Illinois It has been suggested to me that this name could possibly be Latvian spelled Bettija. Any info surrounding this name would be appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read my query and an enormous THANK YOU to everyone at Rootsweb for helping me find the info that I have. Andrew was married to Jane Bryant/Brian/Briant September 1835 in Ross Co. Andrew and Jane are noted as heirs to John Bryant, Chillicothe, Ross Co., OH. Andrew and Jane sold land 1836 to a possible relative of Jane's, Edward Young of Ross Co. There is a Joseph Lemon listed on the 1806 tax list for Ross Co., and later there is a will for a Joseph Lemon supposedly on file in Chillicothe, Ross Co. I suspect this Joseph is the father or at least a relative. Andrew had a brother Joseph born 1808 in Ohio who married an Elizabeth Carmean in 1833 also in Ross. Before the 1840 census both Andrew and Joseph are in Madison Co., IN, living next to each other. Another possible brother is Thomas who married in 1830 Margaret Hann in Ross Co. All three--Andrew, Joseph, and Thomas--were spelling their name Lemmon. Another possible brother could be the John Lemons who died in 1834 at age 22 in Ross County. He is listed for the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Buckskin Twp. Also at the Mt. Pleasant is a Joseph son of an Isaac and Mary Lemons. Andrew's first son was named John, and this makes me suspect that he may have been related to the John Lemon who is shown as a first land owner in Ohio, August 24, 1801. I would think with birth dates as early as 1810 and 1808 for Ross County, the parents of Andrew and Joseph would have to have been among the early settlers, but I can't find any Lemon/Lemons/Lemmon/Lemen first families discussed for the Chillicothe-Ross County area on any genealogy websites. Somebody has to know something about this group. Thank you for any connections. Melody Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Hello, I am looking for Archibald Hamilton born in the Highlands and emigrated to America about 1805, at once settling on a farm in Ross County. He then moved on to Delaware County where his son, John, was born in 1810. In a genealogy sketch by Helen Berkey she lists "Wilson-Lee"-this was James Wilson m to Sarah Lee living in Buckskin Twp. Ross Co., OH. They were pioneers of Buckskin. I am looking for info on their daughter Sarah who married Archibald Hamilton and did they or not have a son John Hamilton. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Abner ALDAY which was taken at the Nugent Studio in Chillicothe, Ohio. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1870's or 1880's with Abner likely in his 20's or 30's at the time it was taken. In addition to his name, someone has written "Teacher" and "Dead" on the back of the photograph. Based on limited research I believe I have been able to locate Abner in census records as follows: 1880 census of Liberty, OH: William ALDAY, age 58, born VA, a Laborer, parents born VA Harriett ALDAY, wife, age 51, born VA, Keeping House, parents born VA John ALDAY, son, age 26, born OH, a Laborer Abner ALDAY, son, age 15, born OH, a Laborer George ALDAY, son, age 12, born OH, at Home Thomas ALDAY, son, age 9, born OH, at Home 1910 census of Springfield, OH: Abner ALDAY, age 45, born OH, parents born VA, a US Postal Mail Carrier I'm hoping to locate someone from Abner's family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this ALDAY Family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
