Hello, I have been doing genealogy on my JONES and BURNS families for about 1 1/2 years. I have made tremendous progress in Illinois & Iowa, but am at a standstill once I trace back into Ross County, Ohio. Let me share what I know--maybe someone will have some clues or be researching these families. I'm wondering if there are cemetery inscriptions for Paint Twp. that might hold a clue in obtaining names of parents or siblings. Cenus and burial records tell me that Spakeman ( Speakmon, Speckman) JONES was born in Ohio about 4 Jul 1813. I find his name to be unusual--where did it come from--is it a maiden name? He died in Fulton County, Illinois 20 Jan 1873. Census and burial records tell me that Elizabeth BURNS JONES, wife of Spakeman, was born in North Carolina about 28 Jan 1814. She passed away in Fulton County, Illinois 6 Aug 1868. They were married in Highland County, Ohio 17 Dec 1838. They appear on the 1840 census in Ross County--Paint Twp. Living beside them is a William JONES which I assume to be a brother. Also in Paint Twp. is an Ellis JONES. I believe they are related, but I don't know how. Children's names of Spakeman and Elizabeth JONES include: Henry Thomas George W. Sarah A. James Monroe Martha J. Andrew G. William Ellis I know nothing at all about Elizabeth Burns except birth, death, marriage, and children. I've been following the list, but don't remember if anyone has mentioned cemeteries in the Paint Twp. area. Is there a a book of cemetery inscriptions for Paint Twp? I am looking for any Jones or Burns that could possibly be the parents of Spakeman or Elizabeth Burns Jones. I'm hoping their children carry some family names that might give me a clue. Thanks so much for your time and assistance. Kristy Schumacher

I am searching for the descendants of John Russell Ziegler b. Dec. 18, 1891 and m. Lenora Helen Montgomery on Oct. 24, 1914. He died in July of 1975 in Bainbridge, Ross Co. OH according to his Social Security citation. The only son Dallas I found on the Ross Co. site as b. 1919 and d. 1936. But I wonder if anyone from the Bainbridge area remembers John Ziegler, or knows anything further on who his daughters married or whether they are still living. They were Laura Winona Ziegler b. 1917 and Mary Margaret Ziegler b. Oct 7, 1921. Richard Shop online without a credit card http://www.rocketcash.com RocketCash, a NetZero subsidiary

Would appreciate any information I could find on the family of Elijah J. Bainter and wife Christina Fernow, they were in Ross Co, OH when son Charles Joseph Bainter was born 8 Sept 1862. Need to know his siblings - where parents went, did they die in Ross Co. Is there cemetery records, and anything else you might know about this family. I know that they could be listed under Bainter, Bender, or Painter. Thank you, Vicki [email protected]
Have been seeking information on my G uncle Charles GROSS. for many years. The data I have says he entered the Civil War in 1864 at age 18. as Charles W. Gross. He was listed on the 1870 age 22 in Ross Co. OH. with his mother and stepfather Friederich Wallrodt and siblings. He did not appear on the 1880 census. It is believed he died about 1878/79 in Ross Co. OH. No obit or death record found. Have evidence he was buried in an unmarked grave in Wards Farm Cemetery in Franklin Twp. even though state records show no veterans buried there. His mother Elizabeth Gross Wallrodt applied for a mothers pension using her Gross name in Feb. 1879. It mentions that Charles sometimes used the name Wallrodt . In the war record his name is listed as Charles W. Gross, maybe the W. stands for Wallrodt ?? his stepfathers name since some relatives say he adopted Charles and his 2 sisters Sophina & Elizabeth. I have a record of Frederich taking Guardianship of the GROSS Children in Waverly Pike Co. in March 1861. I find it hard to believe a Civil War Vet. died with no obit,or fanfare or a report of his death at the County seat in Chillicothe. Maybe his family was living in such abject poverty that no body bothered to make note of the passing of this young veteran who may have died of some disease he picked up while in the service of our country. Any help or clues will be greatly appreciated. John <[email protected]>

I am tracing a 1797 group migration from Hardy CO VA (now the area of Grant CO WV) to southern Illinois and have noticed a number of Hardy CO people going to Ross CO OH. Some, of course, went there directly. But others in my group went to Illinois first then, finding it dangerous due to an epidemic, retreated east to Ross CO OH. Don't know why they chose Ross CO in particular; maybe there's a story for us to uncover. I would be interested in hearing from people researching Ross CO OH ancestors who went there from Hardy CO VA. Please contact direct. Thanks, Nora Tocus

I have a big mess and am hoping for help from Ross CO experts. In 1797 Reverend David Badgley led a migration of 154 people from Hardy CO VA (now WVA) to southern Illinois, traveling on the Ohio River then overland to the vicinity of present-day Belleville. The trip turned into a disaster due to torrential rains, flooded land, exhaustion, not enough food, and finally an epidemic that killed half of them in the summer and fall that followed their July 4 arrival. Some of the survivors immediately picked up and left, and we know of two families that later appeared in Ross CO OH; surnames were CLARK and WHETSTONE. We have wonderful documentation in that one of the Clark children, then ten years old, wrote her memoirs before her death in the 1870's and remembered very well the migration and the death of three brothers before her father removed his family to OH. I am wondering now if any of the others might have also gone to Ross CO (so I'm not just looking for Clarks and Whetstones but more for the circumstances that might have taken people to Ross CO).. So, if you have picked up a similar history from your research or from family story---a big migration from Virginia, arrival in Illinois, a disastrous summer of floods, sickness, and death, and then a retreat to Ross CO----I'd love to hear about it. Where they came from in Virginia was Hardy CO. Where they were in Illinois could be called either St. Clair CO or Monroe CO (not sorted out yet then). Other place names associated with this migration would be Kaskaskia IL (which is where they were heading) and New Design, the town where they ended up. I am trying to reconstruct the list of travelers who journeyed with Badgley. If you can cast light on what happened to any of them, please contact direct. Thanks, Nora Tocus
