There's no record, so he must have purchased the land from a private owner. I've also tried the FHL catalog with no luck, so far. I should have mentioned this all sooner, I'm sorry. I've traced his ownership in Columbiana Co, OH prior to his moving to Richland Co. through the microfilm of the Tax Books (FHL), but I can't seem to locate anything for Richland. John and his wife Magdalena were both Mennonite. John is found 1840 Census/Madison Twp/ living near; John German, John Whisler, Christian Layman and George Castle.
