Perhaps a wild lead, but William Gass, one of the early settlers into Knox and Richland County, OH married a Rea. In fact, they named their son James Rea Gass who was an attorney. I believe they came from Brooke County, WV (then VA) via Pennsylvania. Might be worth looking into.
