Richland Co., Ohio USGenWeb Site Update 06 December 2007 <> http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohrichla/ NEWS & NOTES: Thanks to all who were concerned by my two week absence. The first week was spent preparing for and hosting Thanksgiving for my family. The second week was spent Christmas shopping, attending a couple of Christmas parties, finishing up some homemade quilted gifts and celebrating my birthday! There's so much to do this time of year. Thanks to Dina for creating name indexes for the 1880, 1910, 1914, 1920, 1925 and 1931 Shenandoah tax map sets, the 1870 Butler Twp. map set and the 1914, 1925 and 1931 Bloominggrove Twp. tax map set. All of the maps on the Tax Map CD's have been posted to the site. We are still in need of a few more volunteers to help index them. While there are some indexes on the map images, they are not searchable through our search engine. A few volunteers have really done a wonderful job of creating typed indexes for some of these map sets so that other researchers can find maps with their surnames of interest. Keep this project in mind, and after the holiday maybe you can help us out. It would be nice to get this project finished up - and we still need help. Obituary Index (RCOI) is an index to obituaries that are appearing daily in the Mansfield News Journal. To access the indexes, go to the OBITUARIES page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohrichla/Obituaries.htm then look on the right side of the page under the heading, Obituary Indexes. The index starts with Feb. 20, 2002 and includes entries up to the present year. I usually update the index every two or three months. Once you know the date that the obituary appeared in the paper, you can contact the Sherman Room (genealogy room) at the Mansfield/Richland County Public Library to request a photocopy of it. The prices are quite reasonable. You can find details of ordering obituaries if you scroll down to the middle of the Obituaries page. I have copies of select obituaries, so you are free to contact me (AmyeA@aol.com) to see if I have a copy of it before ordering from the library, however, I cannot provide printouts. +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Amy CC, Richland Co., Ohio USGenWeb Site http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohrichla/ **************************************Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products. Hi I am trying to find out information on the Wade family. Lorenzo and Martha Blackford Wade are listed in the 1920 & 1930 Richland Co. census. Is there anyone researching this family? Thank you Peggy </HTML>
Dear List, I found this and was wondering who was this Alverda L. "Verda" Balliett's parents? This one is not listed in the Balliet book. The Balliet book has Alverda Aurelia "Verda" Balliett d/o Emanuel Balliet and Mary Florence Hills, and married to Edwin Lee Balyeat. "REINHART-BALLIETT VOWS -- At noon today John Reinhart and Miss Verte Balliett of Clark Street were married in the home of the bride, Rev Singley officiating. The couple left for a wedding trip to Chicago and other points." Published 12 Sep 1900, The Daily Globe, Shelby, Ohio Many Thanks in advance! Sandy, I'm going to try to answer both your question directly to me and your broader question on the list at the same time. The source of the info I sent you on Joseph FERGUSON as original purchaser of SW 1/4 of Section 34 of current Monroe Twp., in 1815 came from: Richland County, Ohio: Original Land Purchasers including School Lands, from the original work of Ellsworth H. Morse, Jr., Revised by MAGIC Computer Committee, The Richland County Genealogical Society, 1999, p. 76. Therein, it states that Joseph FERGUSON of Fairfield Co., Ohio, was the original purchaser of this parcel on 15 August 1815. HOWEVER, by the time the purchase price was paid off on 27 September 1819, he had already assigned his claim to that parcel to an Edward ROSE. Page viii of this same book has a pretty good account of how to research Richland County land patents. Three things may be of especial importance to you: the film of the Steubenville Land Office Records (probably stored at the Ohio Historical Society, but check with the OGS Library, as they may also have a copy); Early Ohioans Residences from the Land Grant Records, by M.S. Riegel (OGS, 1976, rep. 1994); and Ohio Lands: Steubenville Land Office 1800 - 1820, by C.W. Bell, n.d., no pub. Anyone interested in land records in land records in Ohio should order the free booklet Ohio Lands, A Short History from the State Auditor, which explains how the Townships, Ranges and Sections were laid out. Briefly, in the case of Richland County, at the time Joseph FERGUSON purchased his land, there were, in fact, only 8 townships in the County and, yes, this land would have been in what was then Worthington. However, political "Townships" did not originally (nor do they often today) correspond to cadastral (or survey) townships. In that part of Ohio in which Richland County lies, the base survey line was the so-called Pennsylvania line and the Ohio River. Ranges were numbered from east to west from the Pennsylvania Line and south to north from the Ohio River, notably skipping over the US Military District lands( of which Knox County, for example, was a part). So, when Joseph Ferguson purchased his land, what he was buying was the SE 1/4 of Section 34 of Range 17 (west of the Pennsylvania Line), Township 22 (north of the Ohio River, with the intervention of the US Military District Lands). Section 34 of what is now Worthington Twp lies in Range 17, Township 21. This land patent was granted by the US Government. Nothing had to be filed with the State of Ohio or Richland County until the land was sold outside the family of the person who received the title from the US Government. In this case, Joseph FERGUSON purchased the land, but the title would have been granted to his assignee, Edward ROSE. For some bizarre reason, none of the grants in Section 34 show up in the BLM/GLO online records. Possibly, the first time that any record of the land was filed with the County was whenever Edward ROSE or his heirs sold the land. Is this the 1823 record you found? Oddly enough, I don't find this parcel in the 1819 Tax Records on the RCO GenWeb site. But is WAS part of the land owned by Jno. FERGUSON in 1873 and was owned separately by Wm. FERGUSON in 1896. I'd guess that William inherited the land. Was his father a John or Jonathan FERGUSON? Anyway, best of luck with your researches, Jim
Sunda, Thanks. Part of the problem is that none of the grants in Section 34 show up in the BLM/GLO online records. But that doesn't mean that it might not be in the records in Columbus. It appears that the first time Section 34 appears in when Edward Rose sold a portion of the section. I've more research to do but I think I may have enough now to solve my puzzle. Hi, No, I don't show that one in my records. I am 99% sure that my William Ferguson was a son of John Ferguson of Bedford County PA. John was a son of Hugh Ferguson, an early settler of Bedford County. Jim Thanks so much for clearing this up. The Edward Rose record was found. I now know where to go to look for the remaining information. The father of the William was John Ferguson. I've noticed that the plat maps divide up that land for William Ferguson, Isaac Ferguson, Almira Feguson and Lovina Berry (Ferguson) up until somewhere between 1914 and 1920. It was during that time that the remaining Ferguson's on Section 34 all died. I'm researching William Ferguson of Monroe County, Richaldn Township. He owned a part of Section 34. I've been told that the original purchaser was Joseph Ferguson of Fairfield County in 1815. (I've asked for the name of the book) I had a friend who spent the day at the courthouse working with someone who works there. They could find nothing that showed when William bought it or even the purchase in 1815 when Joseph bought it. I've learned that Monroe Township was formed in 1817 which from what I gather means that the land that Joseph purchased in 1815 was not part of Monroe Township? Was probably part of Worthington.? However, how could he have purchased Section 34 (today's section 34) if there was another Section 34 in Worthington? How do I research that land? They search by name but couldn't find anything. This book that Joseph's name was found in I hope will give some hint. It had to be transcribed from something. I also know that Louis Bromfield knew that the Ferguson's were the first owners of that port of Section 34. I verified this with his family also because he was a writer and not all his stories were totally true. This land is now part of Malabar Farms. If you ever been there, there is a trail called "Up Ferguson Way" which is also the name of a book he wrote. This trail takes you to the land. This land stayed in the Ferguson family from 1815 until sometime around 1918. Can someone tell me how/where to look for this? Did they miss something at the courthouse? They even had problems with finding all of the changes in Ferguson ownership over the years. The book to which Sandy is referring is probably Richland County Orignal Landowers completed by the Richland County Genealogical Society. See their website for purchase details or e-mail me Sunda@prodigy.net. Many original landowers are not listed in the early courthouse books because the land was purchased from the federal government rather than a person. We made trips to Columbus to Ohio Historical Society to gather information on the School Lands, which were state concerns. [Richland County had more of those than any other county, I believe.] Since the land you are searching is recorded at the Government Land Office of the Bureau of Land Management in Virginia/DC area, see their website at www.blm.glorecords.org. I did that from memory, so will check to make sure that is the correct address for searching for original certificates and printing them from the site. Sandy
