    1. [OHRICHLA] Re: M.E. Church
    2. Doug & Patti Ensor
    3. I'm coming into this conversation a little late, but the M.E. Church, generally refers to a Methodist Episcopal Church which is one of the three divisions of the Methodist church that occurred in the early years of Methodism. The majority (but not all!) of its members are generally of African-American descent, at least in the western U.S. This branch did not reunite with the Methodist branch that joined in the 1970's with the Evangelical United Bretheran (EUB) Church to become the United Methodist Church. The Methodist Episcopal Church remains its own faith as does the Free Methodist Church. Confusing to even most Methodists! 3. I just looked again at the family of my last message. I'm not certain why I have Catherine listed as a child of this marriage other than that she must have been in the 1860 census household. I do not believe she is a child of James and Elizabeth Boals. Perhaps a lister knows her relationship. Elizabeth Richardson

    1. [OHRICHLA] Bronsons and Jumps
    2. Hi; I would really appreciate help on this brick wall. Della A. Jump born 02 June 1861 Richland County Ohio to Amos Ogden Jump and Mary Taggert. She married Albert J. Bronson on 07 December 1882 in Medina County Ohio he was born in March 1859 in Tenn. They had Otto E. Bronson in March 1884 Ohio? Mabel U. Bronson in April 1886 Ohio? Harry E. Bronson in November 1890 Ohio? She signed for her fathers body(Amos Ogden Jump) in December 1901 at the Soldier/Sailers Home in Sandusky, Ohio according to the home's records she was to take the body back to Pavonia in Weller Twp. Richland County Ohio. But so far know there is not a record of burial that area. Not even a gentleman who has a web site that catalogues Civil war veterans has a listing on him. They (Della and Albert) lived at that time at 608 N. Poplar St. in Fostoria, Ohio. I believed he worked in flour mills. Maybe Amos Ogden Jump 1835-1901 is buried in the Fostoria area. I am looking for the location of Amos Ogden Jump to see if the site has been properly marked for a Civil War veteran of E.Co.163rd OVI and to find out what has happened to the others. Thanks for any help or ideas. Dave

    1. [OHRICHLA] Who did Hetty Terman marry??
    2. Janet T. Newman
    3. Hetty Terman was born about 1825 Carlisle PA. She was mentioned in the will of her father John Terman who died over the Christmas season 1842/3 in Madison Township. He left her $200.00, mare, side saddle and bridle. [Her sisters -all married- only got $200 each]. Unless she died, she was married between 1842 and 1850. People usually married the girl next door back then Does this sound familiar to anyone? Janet

    1. [OHRICHLA] United Brethren Church and John Dorcas
    2. Letha Chunn-Mendivil
    3. Thanks to all of you Listers for coming to my genealogical assistance! I've received many responses to my query, and haven't yet had a time to reply to them all. To be more precise, my ancestor, John DORCAS, was an early minister of the UB church listed as having been bought from the Presbyterians in Lexington, Troy Twp, RCO, in 1836. Fellow Lister, Jim Boyce, indicates that there is a Cornerstone Grace Brethren Church near there today. I guess that is where I will start my search! Thanks to you all for your help! Sincerely, Letha Chunn-Mendivil

    3. I forgot to mention in my earlier message, for those who are interested in the Brethren, or any church in the U.S., any good-sized public library (such as the Mansfield-Richland County PL, for example) should have The Encyclopedia of American Religions in their collection, almost certainly in the Reference Section, somewhere in the 200's, likely at R200.973. This is an excellent historical summary of the development of various denominations in the U.S., whether they originated there or elsewhere. Last time I saw a copy, I believe it was limited to "Christian" religions, however. Jim Boyce

    1. Re: [OHRICHLA] United Brethren Church
    2. Jim Boyce
    3. Dear Letha, Hey, you ask interesting questions! John Dorcas was pastor of the United Brethren Church in Lexington, Troy Twp., correct? So far as I can determine, there is not currently any Brethren Church of any persuasion in Lexington proper. However, my A.A. Graham says that the United Presbyterians erected their house of worship at Troy, 1.5 miles NW of Lexington. It then says that the United Brethren "bought the house sold by the Presbyterians in 1836. It was torn down, enlarged, remodeled and furnished, affording a neat and pleasant house." Well, in 2003 there happens to be a church located at 1905 Lexington/Springmill Rd N. known as the Cornerstone Grace Brethren Church. That is the closest "Brethren" Church to Lexington today. As a "Grace Brethren" Church, it would be part of Grace Brethren faction (devotees of the theology of Grace Theological Seminary in Winona Lake, Indiana, as opposed to the Ashland Brethren, who adhered to the theology of Ashland College in Ashland, Ohio) that emerged from the 1939 division of the Brethren Church, itself organized in 1883 by the "Progressive Brethren" followers of Henry Holsinger who were expelled from the German Baptist Brethren (Dunkard) Church in 1882. Who ever said church history was boring? For more details, go to: http://www.brethrenchurch.org/home/history.cfm For a summary of the beliefs of the Brethren Church (the Ashland Brethren, as I couldn't find one for the Grace Brethren), go to: http://www.brethrenchurch.org/home/beliefs.cfm If you think it might le! ad anywhere, go straight to the horse's mouth: Cornerstone Grace Brethren Church 1905 Lexington/Springmill Rd N Mansfield, Ohio 44906 Phone: (419) 747-5012 Email: [email protected] Don Smith, Pastor On the other hand, the United Brethren church claims the distinction of being the first denomination to actually begin in the United States. In 1889, this church also split in 1889,and eventually the larger faction became the United Methodist Church. However, the remnant is still around, known as the Church of the United Brethren in Christ, almost all of their churches bearing the name "United Brethren Church" of Somewhere. For more of this history, go to http://www.ub.org/AboutUs/Intro1_HowBegan.shtml Keep following the links in this History and you will also get a summary of their beliefs. At the Homepage, you will find a church directory. When I did a search for Ohio, I found several listed, but the nearest to this mind which is not to well "up" on Ohio geography seemed to be in Columbus. I have a nifty picture of the Richland Church of the Brethren, located in Franklin Twp. I can e-mail you if it is of interest. I hope some of this helps! Cheers, Jim Oh, by the way, it had no theological or institutional connection with the Quakers (or the Shakers, for that matter).

    3. The United Brethren became the Evangelical United Brethren and in the 1960s became part of the United Methodist Church. My great-grandparents Myron Eugene VAN SCOY (1850-1934) and Sarah Adaline (HUBLEY) Van Scoy (1857-1930) were members of a United Brethren congregation in Richland County, Ohio. I *think* it was the Bloominggrove church and was located on the south side of Base Line Road (which separates Huron and Richland counties) near its intersection with the Rome-Greenwich Road. My great-grandmother's obituary says, "In her young girlhood she united with the United Brethren Church, and has always been an earnest consecrated Christian, with good will ever doing her best to follow in the footsteps of the Christ whom she loved." (She was born in Shenandoah, Richland County.) My great-grandfather's obituary says he "was baptized in 1885 and became a member of the United Brethren Church of Bloomingrove, in which church he took an active part for many years."
