This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------5A9144A972274156EB66F298 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Listers, A few days ago I inquired on the list about German newspapers for Mansfield for 1873-74 and Jim Boyce suggested I contact Tom Neel at OGS. Here is Tom's reply, some of you may be interested in this also. Margaret -------------------------------------------------- Margaret, We do not have the Mansfield Courier - the German newspaper - that early. We do have the following bound volumes: October 1880 - September 1881 October 1881 - September 1883 October 1883 - September 1886 October 1887 - September 1888 October 1891 - September 1892 October 1894 - September 1894 October 1900 - September 1902 October 1902 - September 1904 October 1906 - September 1907 October 1909 - September 1911 Our volumes were given to us by a donor who purchased them at the Black estate sale here in Mansfield. He was able to purchase about one-half of what was on the auction block. I do not know who purchased the remaining volumes. I saw one volume only listed on eBay about a year ago. I contacted Scott Schaut at the Mansfield Museum about this because we were in a spending freeze at that time and I could not bid. I don't know if Scott tried to get the volume or not. Perhaps the others will turn up in time. The Ohio Historical Society inventory the above and have shown an interest in filming it but their funding ran out with their last newspaper filming program. Currently, this newspaper title has not been filmed. I know of no other copies at this time. It is all in German. Thanks. 2. Margaret James
    3. Dear Listers, A few weeks ago we were talking about the men who left for the gold rush and someone mentioned an article "The Lure of Gold" published in the Norwalk paper. I wrote to the library there and got a copy of the article. Even though it was published in the paper, it was taken from Henry Timman's book "Just Like Old Times" Book 1, 1972-1974 so I am not sure about the copy rights so will just list the names mentioned and if anyone wants the whole article (it is only 1 page), you can email me for my address and send me a SASE and I'll send you a copy or you can write to Norwalk Public Library, 46 W Main St, Norwalk OH 44857 and get a copy for $1. Ask for the copy from the book, it is easier to read. It appeared in the Norwalk Reflector, June 14, 1974, pg 4. Names in the order they appear in the article: John Howlett, a butcher; Enoch Jenny, son of Obadiah; Mr Childs of Greenfield; Dr Kittredge; Dr Salisbury of Norwalk; SD Carkhuff of Norwalk; Mr Lee of Fairfield; Hubbel of Monroeville; Grosh & Walker of Milan; sons of Shepherd Patrick; Lewis Sturges, son of Thaddeus & Thaddeus; Charles Goodrich; Joshua H Drake; Delano & Charles Henry Patrick; John H McArdle; EB Atherton; AW Lee of Bronson; Ira Seymour; Barton Lee; Reuben Burras of Fairfield. Twenty men left Sandusky for the Klondike in Alaska in Feb 1898: JE Snevely; Frank Adelman of Norwalk; HV Zuercher of Norwalk; William Cowen, J Livengood & Ross Livengood of Milan. Margaret

    3. Hi Margaret! The nearest German newspaper was in Mansfield. The COURIER first appeared on 5 October 1872 and was still being published in 1880. If it exists on film, it's probably at OGS, OHS or the State Library. ----- Original Message ----- From: Margaret James To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, April 30, 2003 4:56 PM Subject: [OHRICHLA] German newspaper Dear listers, Does anyone know what the nearest German newspaper was if you lived in Mansfield in the 1870's? 3. I'm not really sure why you are posting this on Richland Co. 1870 Census, RCO, shows 1 Joseph Miller. 3d Ward Mansfield, same age as yours, but born France, as is his wife, Mary. All different children, born Ohio. Clearly not yours.I see your Joseph S in Ashland Co. that year. I think you may have made a mistake in posting to the wrong board. There is a Mary E Miller, 21 in the 1870 Census for Monroe Twp., RCO, servant in the household of Joseph Smart (whose wife appears to have been prviously married to a McBride (or maybe those are grandchildren). My guess is that the children were living with grandparents after the death of theor mother, but I can't find them in 1870, either.
