    2. Kathryn Allahyari
    3. I was in Mansfield, Richland Co., last week to do research on my DILLER/LIME line and found the Local History Room in the Public Library very useful. They have newspapers on microfilm (only 3 readers tho' - and don't try to use the last one on the right.....), a nice collection of Richland Co. books and records, and a helpful staff. There is also the Richland Co., Genealogical Society on 7th and So. Main (very difficult to locate unless you're heading south on hiway 13!) They are open only until 5 and are closed Sun & Mon, so go there and the Courthouse on the Square early, and then hit the library - it's open til 9 pm. Watch the photocopier - it eats money if you put in a bunch of change to do alot of photocopying at one time. Sorry, I don't know anything about dog sitters - but do take a drive around town - they are doing alot of rennovation of *old* buildings - just watch out for a bunch of one-way streets. Hope you find alot of great info and have alot of fun!!! 3. The Ohio Genealogical Society, 713 South Main Street, Mansfield, Ohio, is the best place to do Richland County research, in my opinion. Membership is $27.00 per year or you can pay $4.00 per day. A volunteer is there each day to help guide you. Hours are 9-5 Tuesday through Saturday. The Mansfield-Richland County Public Library is next best and it is open evenings, Monday through Thursday 9-9, Friday and Saturday 9-5:00 or 5:30. It has microfilm of most of the newspapers published in the county. The Sherman Room is the local history and genealogy room.

    3. We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We have just published the list of residents of the RICHLAND County Poor Farm from the 1850 Census. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on OHIO on the table of states, and finally on RICHLAND on the table of counties. If you have been to the website recently you may have to click REFRESH or RELOAD on the browser to see the new information. There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS (which explains why you might climb over your own "brick walls" at the poorhouse) as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newsletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! Thanks, Linda Crannell (aka=The Poorhouse Lady)

I am looking for a marriage record for James Smith and Susana around 1830 give or take a year or two. Their first daughter was born in 1831. I do not know Susana's maiden name. I found them in Census records in Indiana in 1850 and the names are listed and the parents and eight of the children are born in Ohio. I have looked through Census re cords prior to 1850 but have not been able to find them. The Only Ohio marriage record I can find for a James Smith and Susana is from Darke County and the Susana is an Overly but now that I know where James is born I would have to say that it is not them... Just recieved Civil War records for their son James W, my gggrandfather. His Military record stated that he was born in DeKalb Ohio. Any help would be appreciated... Thanks, Janet Smith.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AYB.2ACE/433.1.1 Message Board Post: Thankyou Jason! I have been trying to find out some info on Richard or Christopher Burkett. I know he died Dec of 1861 at the age of 31. He leaves a wife Elizabeth and four children, Alfred; William; Catherine; and my ggrandfather James Franklin who was just a few days old. This family has a sad story as all of the children die in their 20's and early 40's. I guess it carries over as my own father died of a heart attack at 36.I find this family in the Knox co census July of 1861. They are listed under Barkett. A libraian there found an old paper that read Christopher Burkett dies in steam saw mill accident in Lexington formerly of Knox. This is where my story goes cold. I know Elizabeth brought the four children to Iowa a few years later and the story picks up here.I want so much to know what happened in Ohio. In the Knox census it showed an old man Michael 76 and woman Catherine 74 living with them.I've always thought these were my greatgrandfather's parents but I have no idea where they! ended up when their son died. Any help you can give me would be so greatly appreciated. I am at a dead end. My email is [email protected] Sincerely thankyou! Linda
