    3. Hello Kathy, You committed one of the most common newbie errors in genealogy. You find good info but forget to jot down where you found it. Then six months later you need to follow up but can remember where you found the data. Always record the source of any data you collect. Just flip the page over and jot down the book title, author, library file number, etc., so you could find it again if necessary. Or photocopy the title page of the book along with your recorded data. Libraries generally pencil in the books shelf file number on that page. Likewise do similar tagging of your Internet web sites. Eventually you will meet experienced genealogists researching your ancestors and they will ask you for the sources that substantiate your conclusions on those hard to pin down ancestors. Of course, you will also meet "genealogists" who get defensive when you ask for their sources, as though you are implying they are less than fully truthful. Recording your sources may be twice the work but it saves you half the time when you can quickly relocate that reference. We have all learned this the hard way. Good luck in your never-ending genealogy quest! No giggling allowed, okay? > >About four weeks ago, when I was just beginning my search for family, I found information about my Portage County folks in the Censuses of 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, and 1850. But, having only been looking for information for about three days, and having no genealogical software at that time, and not even knowing how to use my "copy and paste" function of my mouse yet ( TOLD YOU I WAS NEW AT THIS!!) I just handwrote the information on a piece of paper and put it in a folder. > >Well, now I know a lot more, and I would like to go back and look at those Censuses again. But did I write down where I found this information???? NO! > >I sure do feel silly. And now I cannot find the place where I located the information in the first place. It was definitely on the Web somewhere. And I feel sure that it must have been in the Portage County Web Site. But I am stuck. Can anyone please direct this poor silly lady back to those Censuses? I would so much appreciate it. You can even laugh at me if you want! > >Kathy Funk >[email protected] > >
