    1. [OHPORTAG-L] Welsh in Palmyra, Ohio - O Ble yn Gymru?
    2. Orfant
    3. I'm searching Evan and Elizabeth (Williams) Davis and their children John (my granddad), Mary, Morgan, Ann, Thomas, and Howard. The parents and the first four children were in Palmyra, Ohio (Portage County) in 1880 according to the Census. There's no 1890 census surviving so I'm stuck. I know they emmigrated from South Wales between 1873 and 1875 and that they may have come by way of Johnstown, PA.. Palmyra apparently is a very small place. I've learned that there are two Palmyras in Ohio as I discovered in a phone call to the only church in the Knox County town (Apparently its pretty small too). I finally spoke with a very nice lady at the Portage County Historical Museum who told me that there were indeed lots of Welsh in Palmyra and that when she first moved their from Akron they "were surrounded by Welsh." Thre were two coal mines there, anthracite coal. One was the "Merlin Coal Company," and the other was the "Black Diamond Coal Company." For obvious reasons, I'm betting on Merlin. All of this is my roundabout way of asking if any of you have any familial connections to Palmyra, Ohio. I'm hoping that since it was a small place there would have been a distinct familial or geographical character to the Welsh migration there. I've already posted a query on the Portage County Message Board but I also wanted to try again here.
