This is in response to message in the archives about this subject written in Sept. 1999: I have the ancestry of Rachel CRAYS back several generations if anyone is still interested. I believe that Rachel and Ira were married prior to 1841, possibly in Edinburgh, where someone indicated they appear in the 1840 Federal Census. Rachel's father was Joseph Crays, b. in 1759 in Scotland, who appears in Barree Twp. of Huntingdon Co., PA, in 1790 & the tax assessment records of 1791, and in the 1800 U.S. census with 1 male and 1 female child under 10; and, the 1810 U. S. Census of Penn. in Mahoning Twp., Mercer Co. (now Lawrence Co.). He bought land in Milton Twp.,Trumbull Co., Ohio in 1816 next to Alexander and John Crays. This was two years after a John Crays bought land there in 1814. Alexander Crays was in Poland Twp. as early as 1804/6 (tax rolls). His son, Joseph Jr. bought land there in 1833. Joseph's farm was given to: sons Alex. & David (45 acres each) and wife & dau. Jane - 25 acres. He appears in U.S. census of 1830 and 1840 as living in Milton Twp. Trumbull Co., Ohio. I have written an unpublished book about the CRAYS' ancestry because my wife is a CRAYS and the second great grant niece of Rachel Crays.
