Hi, New to the list. I am trying to find information from the 1910 census for Kent Ohio, but it isn't coming up under the Portage County town choices (looking on ancestry.com). What county was Kent listed under back then? I know "Kent" was another name but that was many years before. Thanx for all your help, Cindy By the way, I am researching Glenn Ober (possibly Robert) GRAHAM and wife Frances Elizabeth MOORE. Frances attended Kent Normal College before it changed to Kent State University. Any information is wonderful. Thanx again in advance, Cindy
Go back to the 1910 Ohio, Portage County, click "Other townships". You'll find four districts for Kent "Village". I have been trying to find birth place and parents for my George B. Tuttle so have been putting Tuttle's into my data base from Portage, Trumbull and surrounding areas hoping that I eventually make a conneciton. George was b. 1824 in Ohio and married in Geauga Co. to Wealthy A. Rockafellow. (1855) I show a John Tuttle, b. 1762 in Sunderland MA and died 10/19/1829 in Palmyra, Portage Co. He was married 3 times and by a Sarah/ Sally Broad had a daughter named Abigail b. 1796. There is also an Abigail Tuttle b. abt 1800 who was the daughter of Clement Tuttle and Abigail Dutton. Good Luck, Barb
Does anyone know anything about John Tuttle who supposedly came to Palmyra in 1805 from Sunderland, Mass? I'm interested if he would have had a daughter named Abigail who married Asa Briggs on September 18, 1830 in Portage County. It was said she was from Palmyra and I do have the marriage certificate for Asa and Abigail. If you have any information on this family, I would really appreciate hearing from you. Marilee

I started a search and found them all in Vermont over those years. At least I hope they are yours!! It wasn't easy finding some of them. Apparently Nabby was short for Abigail!! I have ancestors from Portage County who spelled their name Willyard and Williard, almost interchangeably. The name is spelled differently than yours, but you might want this information regardless. It's interesting that your Willard is living in Brimfield. I say that because my gggg grandmother's sister, Barbara Willyard, married John Boosinger. The Boosingers then moved to Brimfield and some sources say that they were the first family to settle in Brimfield. I wonder if your Willard was a relative of my Willyard/Boosinger familiy, and that is why they were in Brimfield. Your Josiah and my Barbara were about the same age. She was born in 1788 and married in 1813. The Willyard/Williard family of Portage county is a fairly well documented family. I have a website with some of the information. I haven't spent a whole lot of time on the Willyard family though. Here is the URL: http://familytreemaker.com/users/r/h/i/Brian-Rhinehart-Ohio/index.html By the way, I also have Alonzo O. Willyard and Agnes Lowrie, married Jan 14, 1874 in Portage county. I don't the family or parents of either one of them, but I have Alonzo's name spelled with they Y in the name. I believe that I got that from the Portage County marriage records. Brian

I am seeking information on Josiah Willard who was born about 1804, probably in Pawlet, Rutland Co., VT to Jonathan and Delia/Deliverance (Haskins) Willard. On 23 Dec. 1825 in Rupert, Bennington Co., VT, Jonathan married Abigail Lobdell who was born 16 Oct. 1803 in Danby, VT. In 1840 Josiah appears to be in Brimfield, Portage Co., OH. I think he died somewhere around 1850 and that Abigail is in the 1850 census for Shalersville, Portage Co., OH. I have not found Abigail in any other census until 1880 when she is living back in Vermont in Wells, Rutland Co., VT with a son, Myron. I have not been able to read the 1850 census entry for her on Ancestry.com. I am descended from their daughter Nancy Willard who married Augustus Willard Gilman here in Vermont. I would like to find out when and where Josiah died, the names of their other children, and their listings in the various censuses. Thanks for any help you can give me! Joann Nichols Brattleboro, VT
I have a picture of ancestors sitting on the porch of a building that has the name LAFALOT on a sign on it. Someone said they thought it was a social club. I'm not even sure it was in Portage County, but that is where most of the relatives lived, and the photo says "Ohio 1909". Does anyone have any idea what the LAFALOT club was, or where? Thanks! I am seeking information about James M. HALL, resident of Shalersville, Portage County, OH in 1850. In early Census records, James is listed as a farmer. Later in life, he is listed as a farm laborer. Sometime after 1850, James and his wife Lydia moved to Chautauqua County, NY where his 3 married daughters resided. The connection between Shalersville, OH and Chautauqua, NY is a mystery, but for some reason, all 3 duaghters married residents of NY. James M. HALL died and is buried in the Pecor Cemetery, Portland, Chautauaqua, NY, but with the exception of Elizabeth HALL BENTLEY, none of the other three women's graves have been located. I would appreciate hearing from anyone familiar with HALL history in Portage County OH. One other unsolved mystery is John MOTT, an 11 year old living with the HALLS in the 1850 census. I am searching for descendants of this family listed below. If you are connected, I would love to hear from you. Elisha CARRIER, b. c. 1768, CT; d. August 1845, age 77 yrs; buried in Restland Cemetery, Brimfield. He married as his second wife, Lodemia SCOVILLE, in Goshen, Litchfield County, CT on 29 May 1813. Lodemia born circa 1799, in CT (probably Cornwall or Norfolk); d. 1873 in Brimfield (have been trying to locate her exact death date). This couple one child I am aware of, there may be others: Lucius CARRIER, b. 1820, prob. CT; d. 1842, age 22; m. Orilla EMERSON, on 10 February 1839, she b. 1811; d. 1862. They had the following children (?) 1. Joseph CARRIER, b. 24 November 1839, Brimfield; d. 30 September 1896; he married Mary M. EDSON on 13 June 1861 in Brimfield; Mary was b. 5 June 1836; d. 5 September 1899. Their children: Elmer Edson CARRIER, 24 October 1869;m. Jennie COON/KOON; 2. Edna CARRIER 2. Milton or John Milton CARRIER. Nothing more known. The above people (except Milton) are buried in the Restland Cemetery. I have the 1850 & 1860 census for Brimfield, as well as the marriage, cemetery, and pages from "Brimfield and It's People, Life in a Western Reserve Town," that mentions the Carriers, some of them were teachers. Are there any other sources I can check? Any chance of an obit for Lodemia? I am trying to prove her line as well as Elisha's. Any help appreciated. Jan in CT
Hi, Sally; I think we have someone in common: I am fairly new to family history; and within the last month obtained a 'stack' of info from other family members, which I am in the process of sorting for entry into my software: I was born and raised in Palmyra, Ohio. I have a Stephen S. THOMAS (my g,grandfather) b 1 Jan, 1843, Palmyra, Portage, Ohio; Son of David S. THOMAS b 17 Jun 1800 Carmarthenshire, Wales, and Ann WILLIAMS b abt 1805-07, Wales. Stephen d 15 Apr, 1929; Stephen m 26 Oct, 1972 Elizabeth LLOYD; b 20 Sep, 1849 North Wales; d 30 Mar 1900; Both Stephen and Elizabeth are buried in Palmyra West Cem Their children: (? variations on names?) Laura Elizabeth (?Laura Etta?) 13 Feb, 1874; Anna Jane 11, Oct, 1875; John David (? David John?), 27 (?8?) Aug, 1877; Foster W. 19 Oct, 1879; Edna 13 Nov, 1883; Arthur 21 Apr, 1886; died abt age 6; Charles Herbert 29 Jul, 1888; My Grandfather! 'Uncle' John was a retail grocer in Oklahoma City, OK, and my parents visited his family there, enroute to California during WWII, when I was a toddler. Hi Mary, Thanks for the reply. I do have that cenus info. I am hoping to find out more about the Thomas family in Palmyra. Was there ever a county history written? This family, starting with David and Ann Thomas came from Wales about 1841 and the descendants lived there until at least 1929 when Stephen died. So they must have had some impact on the town. I'm especially interested to find out if David J. ever was called John David as I have a link to him in OK and family stories that say they are related to the original immigrant, David Thomas.
