For instance, Franklin Township is Range 9, Town 3. They can look this up for you, but if you know it before you walk in, they'll be impressed! Mary, By your message you are asking what the hours are for the Portage County Administration Building. There are no difference between summer or any other time. Hours are 8am til 4:30pm Monday thru Friday except for federal holidays. The Adm. Building is the old Robinson Memorial building. Hope this helped. I am looking for anyone who has knowledge of the Isaac and Amanda (Mandy) Long Family of Portage Ohio. Isaac was born in 1883 in Fannin County Georgia. He met Amanda and they moved to Portage (kent) Ohio. According the 1930 Census Isaac and Amanda had the following Children in Portage OH: 1. Leroy Long b. 1916 2. Lawrence Long. b. 1919 3. Lewis Long b. 1920 4. Donald Long b. 1927 Anyone that can offer any knowledge on this family our their descendants would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Brian mericke@alltel.net
Chris, Thanks very much for the offer. I have the location of Charlotte Giddings's and son Darwin's headstones from a transcription that includes info from the Western Reserve Historical Society's survey from the twenties or thirties. I think I've found the stone (I live in Kent). It's in rough shape, but I think a rubbing or strong raking light might bring out what's left of the lettering. It looks like someone has adopted the stone. (My wife and I have adopted Thomas and Dorothy White in the same cemetery. First Giddings (not a relative, by the way), then the Whites lived in our house in Kent.) I wonder, does Pioneer Cemetery allow rubbings? Thanks for the Giddings tips, too. I think the Wisconsin Giddings was living there before my Giddings left Kent, unless some of the Wisconsin local history I've seen has incorrect dates. Maybe I'll take another look. There was a James Giddings who was active in Franklin Township politics around 1840, and who co-owned land in Streetsboro with David Giddings--maybe brothers--but I haven't been able to find any genealogical info about James, either. Speaking of Portage County cemeteries, have you seen what's being done at Streetsboro center cemetery? The road is being widened to within about 8 feet of the headstones! Thanks again! See ya around the graveyard! Jeff, I've transcribed what I could read of the Stow Street Cemetery (now called Pioneer Cemetery). You can find the transcription here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ohiocem/pioneercem.htm I do not see any Barton's or Giddings in the list, but so many of them were unreadable, and I could only read sections, if anything at all. Take a look and if you see anything that looks like it might belong to your ancestors, let me know and I'll be happy to go take pictures, etc. I live just down the road from the cemetery (in fact that was the first cemetery I ever transcribed!). I found 2 David Giddings in the 1880 census: Columns are: Name, Age, Est. birthdate, birthplace, relation to head-of-house, marital, race, gender, City. David GIDDINGS 70 <1810> Massachusetts Other Single White Male Austin, Mower, MN David GIDDINGS 71 <1809> Massachusetts Self Married White Male Empire, Fond Du Lac, WI Don't know if either of these are your David, but they might be worth looking into, depending on how old he was when he married Charlotte. There's also a David Giddings in Montgomery County, Jackson Twp., OH in the 1850 census. I can do some more looking on Ancestry if you're interested. Good luck! I am trying to find information on Inza Mae Nichols and thought I would give the page a try ; ) This is what I have and although she was born in Portage Cnty, know she has ties to Lorain. Inza was born in Portage Cnty, have no date but estimate 1888 - 1900 or so. She died in 1961. She could possibly be buried in Park Cemetery in Garrettsville, Portage Cnty. She married Harry Snyder and he died after 1927. They had 3 children, Raymond Snyder, Ruth Snyder and Darlene Snyder. Any help would be much appreciated. Mona Caldwell Orlando, Fla.
