    3. Joe; Diamond is in Palmyra township, and I believe it was the name of the railroad stop - the railroad had been abandoned for many years. It is the US Post Office location. There was a 'Black Diamond' coal mine in the area many years ago, that my Dad talked about, and I think he used to get coal from that mine for our home furnace (I'm giving away my age!). Diamond is about 1.5 miles east of Palmyra Center on what used to be Ohio State Route 18, until I-76 was built about 1/2 mile north and paralleling the route. It is now a Portage County road. 1. [OHPort'ge] Cemetery transcriptions - Re: Little towns in Portage County
    2. For those of you researching Portage County ancestors, I'm working on a website that gives transcriptions of headstones, and pictures of each stone. I'm concentrating mostly on Portage County right now, although I'm also working on a few cemeteries in Cuyahoga and Summit counties, also. You can find the website here: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ohiocem/ I've already transcribed the Olde Cemetery in Rootstown, which has a few 1776 vets, and many Civil War vets in it. Just go to Portage County, and each cemetery is listed separately. Interestingly enough, Ye Olde Cemetery in Rootstown is the first cemetery where my husband and I actually got a picture of a ghost, but that's another story :) This is also the first cemetery where a tombstone actually listed a date of death as February 30th. I usually spend spring and summer walking the cemeteries, and late fall and winter typing up the transcriptions and putting them on the web, so keep checking back, I have a lot of work to do this winter! Please feel free to contact me directly if you wish with questions about the cemeteries and the transcriptions. My goal is to eventually transcribe all of the 'small' cemeteries in Portage County (most of the very large cemeteries like Standing Rock and Maple Grove have cemetery sexton's keeping records), before they become totally effaced by the weather. 3. I'm trying a new tactic to track down info on my family in Palmyra in 1880. Bleary eyed from scanning census entries, it's become pretty clear to me that Palmyra had to be something on the order of 2/3 Welsh in 1880. So, I'm wondering of anyone has any information on the families living on either side of my great grandparents on the assumption that proximity could indicate familiarity! Anyone sound familiar? 3. Ohhhhhh Marci : I think you are slightly confused! As someone else stated recently, the Western Reserve was laid out (surveyed) into ranges and townships, with a Range being 30 miles square, consisting of 6x6=36 townships, each 5 miles square. Deerfield, Palmyra, Edinburg, Paris, Charlestown, and Ravenna(Twp, as opposed to City) are each individual townships, and not a part of each other. Diamond is an exception, being the name of the railroad stop, which IS in Palmyra township. Diamond center is about 1.5 miles due east of Palmyra center, and the mailing address (Post Office) for most of Palmyra, is Diamond, Ohio. The PO was originally located in Diamond because of the railroad. As a side note, Paris, Palmyra, Deerfield, Edinburg and Charlestown make up Southeast School district, formed in the 1950's from the 5 independent township schools, and so named because the 5 townships lie in the southeast corner of Portage County. I haven't lived in the area for quite a few years, but I think that the City of Ravenna has still not grown beyond the boundaries of Ravenna Township, unlike many other, larger cities which today encompass multiple townships, or parts of several: Cleveland, Akron, Columbus, Youngstown, . . .
