I sure have learned my lesson. Four weeks ago I never dreamed I'd be this far into it and so knee-deep in papers! I can say without a doubt I'll be making good notations everywhere now! A fellow Redfield researcher told me (about a week after I had all that good census info written down, without writing down where I found it) "Sources are the heart and soul of your genealogy work" and now I understand what she meant. To all the other newbies out there.........WRITE IT DOWN! Unfortunately, I still cannot locate that wonderful place I found my folks. Guess the library will be seeing me very soon! Thanks, though, to everyone who sent the links. If those Redfields and Jeromes are on in it, I sure can't retrace my steps to find it. I even searched through the "History" button on my browser, going link by link through the last four weeks. Sure am scratching my head on this one, but if nothing else, I am persistent. I'll find it! 3. Hello Kathy, You committed one of the most common newbie errors in genealogy. You find good info but forget to jot down where you found it. Then six months later you need to follow up but can remember where you found the data. Always record the source of any data you collect. Just flip the page over and jot down the book title, author, library file number, etc., so you could find it again if necessary. Or photocopy the title page of the book along with your recorded data. Libraries generally pencil in the books shelf file number on that page. Likewise do similar tagging of your Internet web sites. Eventually you will meet experienced genealogists researching your ancestors and they will ask you for the sources that substantiate your conclusions on those hard to pin down ancestors. Of course, you will also meet "genealogists" who get defensive when you ask for their sources, as though you are implying they are less than fully truthful. Recording your sources may be twice the work but it saves you half the time when you can quickly relocate that reference. We have all learned this the hard way. Good luck in your never-ending genealogy quest! Yours truly, Bill and Loydean Allen end -----Original Message----- From: Kathy Funk <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Monday, August 23, 1999 7:14 AM Subject: [OHPORTAG-L] PORTAGE COUNTY CENSUS INFO >Okay, I really am new at this.
