Surnames: LEWIS WALKER Submitter: Elaine B. Favre ([email protected]) Date: 13 Sep 1999 I have inherited a number of family photographs, ca the Civil War, and naturally unidentified. The only clue I have to the identies lies in the postmark on some of them which came from Ravenna, OH. These were the type of thing sent to family , and possibly someone in the area would have received them also, and would have a record of who they were. Is there a site on Ohio Genweb (or elsewhere)where I might post photocopies to inquire? Thanks. EFAVRE
I just stumbled into this site today. It is hosted by RootsWeb and is called "Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness". It is a place to receive long distance help or volunteer for that service. Volunteers are asked to limit their legwork to one day per month. I don't know about you, but I have had so many kind people help me that I feel I owe the genealogical community some help of my own. Living so far away from my roots I have had to depend on others to give me clues or actually visit a place to retrieve much needed information. I can do that here for others. Once a month is a very easy thing to do. So I signed up for Travis County, Texas. Here is the link for the site. http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnraogk/index.htm I think it would be great if those of us who were able gave just one day a month for others. Kathy

Hi Kathy, the Portage Co. book can be bought from Portage Co. Historical Site on the web. Unless they are out of them. It would really serve you well, because so many of our ancestors are in there. Sorry haven't had time to look up some things for you, crisis in family. Hoping things settle down soon. Cousin Sandy

Well, I'm really stuck on this one. Maybe someone here can shed some light. My great-great grandfather, Henry Knapp Redfield of Randolph, Ohio married Mary Donnell, of Atwater, Ohio on March 25, 1852. This info comes from the book "History of Portage County" published by Warner, Beers and Company, 1885. And I know that Mary Donnell's parents were John and Myra Donnell of Atwater. But now I'm stuck. I don't know where they came from, who their parents were, or anything else. Does anyone have any ideas for me? I don't have a copy of that "History of Portage County" book. It is out of print, so I am not sure if more info could be found on them there. But perhaps there's a link somewhere out there. ANY info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Kathy Funk in Texas

Thanks. My Evan is Evan E. Davis on the 1880 census. I think that it was most likely Davies and was Americanized. I don't have him in Allegheny County, family lore says Johnstown, but anything is possible. the only rub is that a daughter was born in Palmyra in 1875 and a son in 1880 so I can't see a Pittsburgh angle. What does DI stand for? Is is Date of Immigration? I'm searching Evan and Elizabeth (Williams) Davis and their children John (my granddad), Mary, Morgan, Ann, Thomas, and Howard. The parents and the first four children were in Palmyra, Ohio (Portage County) in 1880 according to the Census. There's no 1890 census surviving so I'm stuck. I know they emmigrated from South Wales between 1873 and 1875 and that they may have come by way of Johnstown, PA.. Palmyra apparently is a very small place. I've learned that there are two Palmyras in Ohio as I discovered in a phone call to the only church in the Knox County town (Apparently its pretty small too). I finally spoke with a very nice lady at the Portage County Historical Museum who told me that there were indeed lots of Welsh in Palmyra and that when she first moved their from Akron they "were surrounded by Welsh." Thre were two coal mines there, anthracite coal. One was the "Merlin Coal Company," and the other was the "Black Diamond Coal Company." For obvious reasons, I'm betting on Merlin. All of this is my roundabout way of asking if any of you have any familial connections to Palmyra, Ohio. I'm hoping that since it was a small place there would have been a distinct familial or geographical character to the Welsh migration there. I've already posted a query on the Portage County Message Board but I also wanted to try again here.
