Sorry gang, guess sending photos through the e-group doesn't work. My sent mailbox showed it beautifully but the inbox has jibberish text instead of a photo. If you are at all interested in the photos of Mottown Cemetery, e-mail me at <[email protected]> and I will send it directly to you. Ellen Mott
has anyone seen this bible? it was Ebenezer and Nancy Keen Pearson's, and a partial transcript was given to the Portage Co. genealogical society for their quarterly. I've been trying for some five years in various ways to find this bible and get copies of the genealogical pages in it. so far I have been fruitless in my search. Ebenezer was a brother of my ancestor, John J. Pearson, and he filled his bible with the genealogy of several of his relatives. I would like to have copies so I can continue the research. thanks for any help you can be in finding this elusive treasure. Cornelia

Hi, Does anyone have a web site for looking up physicians who practiced medicine around 1825 - 1850? Or schools of medicine that list physicians that would have graduated medical school about 1825? I know medicine was in it's infancy then but it seems like there should be some record of the few physicians of the time. Thanks. Ellen

Doug, The Revolutionary War reference comes from the cemetery book where everyone who served is listed in a separate place. If you have access to the Internet, You may find it useful to do a search for this man at Ancestry.com, their military records are free right now. I found three listings for Joseph Shepherd in Revolutionary War records for Ohio. Two of the records are for the same man who mustered in and out on two different occasions. The third record is for an older man. If you know your Joseph's date of birth you will be able to determine which of these men is your ggggrandfather. Since he is listed in the cemetery book there must have been an obituary that was used by the Portage County Genealogical Society to list him in the cemetery book. You may want to search for an obituary listing around the time you estimate he died. Best wishes in your search, Tali Barbosa -----Original Message----- From: Doug Shepherd [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, November 12, 1999 9:09 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [OHPORTAG-L] Death, estate, burial lookups Dear Tali Thank you for your response. I believe that the Joseph you describe is likely the one I am seeking. I am curious about the comment that "It is clear that he served in the Revolutionary War". Dear Tali Thanks again for your help. I have searched for obituaries in this area but have not found any online so will likely need to contact the local historical society and national Revolutionary War resources to see what they have. I will also try the military links you described. Your help and patience is greatly appreciated. Hi Dulcie, This must be your ggrandfather: Christopher W. Gee Residence not listed; 36 years old. Enlisted on 8/24/61 as a Private. On 8/26/61 he mustered into "A" Co. OH 41st In- fantry. He was discharged for disability on 8/15/65 at Cin- cinnati, OH. Sources: - Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio. Regiment History OHIO FORTY-FIRST INFANTRY (Three Years) Forty-first Infantry. - Cols., William B. Hazen, Aquilla Wiley; Lieut.-Cols., John J. Wiseman, George S. Mygatt, Robert L. Kimberly, Ephraim S. Holloway; Majs., John H. Williston, Ezra Dunham. This regiment was organized at Camp Wood, from Aug. 26 to Oct. 29, 1861, to serve for three years. On the expiration of its term of service the original members (except veterans) were mustered out, and the organization composed of veterans and recruits retain- ed in service until Nov. 27, 1865, when it was mustered out in accordance with orders from the war department. The following is a list of battles, in which this regiment bore an honorable part, taken from the Official Army Register, Part V, page 116: Shiloh, Stone's river, Woodbury, Liberty gap, Tenn.; Chickamauga, Ga.; Brown's ferry, Chattanooga, Orchard knob, Missionary ridge, Tenn.; Rocky Face ridge, Resaca, Adairsville, Cassville, Dallas, Pickett's mills, Kennesaw mountain, Chattahoochee river, Siege of Atlanta, Lovejoy's Station, Ga.; Franklin and Nashville, Tenn. Of 373 who entered the engagement at Shiloh 141 were either killed or wounded in half an hour. Of 410 officers and men at Stone's river - the largest number it ever took into bat- tle - 112 were killed or wounded. At the close of the fight at Orchard knob, Gen. Thomas said to Col. Wiley, who command- ed the 41st in that battle: "Colonel, I want you to express to your men my thanks for their splendid conduct this after- noon. It was a gallant thing - a very gallant thing." The losses of the regiment in this battle, and at Missionary ridge were severe, 115 of the regiment having fallen, most of them at Orchard knob. At Rocky Face ridge the regiment, now reduced to a battalion, was complimented for its steadi- ness under a galling fire, and at Resaca it gained a crest within 75 yards of the enemy's main line and effectually pre- vented the use of his artillery. At Dallas it lost 108 men out of 260, one company losing 20 out of 22, and another 9 out of 11. At the Chattahoochee river it lost 2 men killed and 5 wounded. From 331 men at the beginning of the Atlanta campaign the regiment dwindled to 91. Of those lost 150 fell in battle. Source: The Union Army, vol. 2 Historical Data Systems, Inc. P.O. Does anyone have any information on Dr. Joseph & Eunice DeWolff? I just found a listing of Dr. Joseph DeWolff in the 1830-1839 Revenna Temperance Society membership list. In his residence in the Portage County Census for 1850 is the earliest listing I have for Jackson A. Mott age 15. I would like to trace the DeWolff family to see if I can find out why Jackson Mott was living there and maybe discover a clue as to where Jackson Mott was before that and who his parents were. Am interested in any information on the DeWolff family. Thanks. Jackson Mott is next listed in Summit County 1860 census presumably in the home of his then future wife Alzina. Her surname in unreadable in this census. By 1870 he was back in Franklin Twnshp, Portage County with his wife Alzina and 3 children. Ellen
Doug and anyone else interested in the Shepherd family, There is a Joseph Shepherd buried in Hawley Cemetery in Paris Township. The gravesite is unknown and there is no information such as death date. It is clear that he served in the Revolutionary War. This information comes from "Portage County Ohio Cemeteries, Vol. VIII".
