    2. Hi Doug: There are no Henry's in the Pioneer Association list. There are several Hartzells, Joseph who was 63 in 1903, and lived in Boston Twp, Summit Co, (his wife also), and a D. H. (53 in 1909) and Lois (41 in 1909) who resided in Alliance, Stark Co, OH. That's it. Jackie

    2. Hi Carolyn: There are two Tripletts, Austin and Mary. They joined in 1900 at ages 63 and 60 respectively, and their residence was Coventry. I think I need to clarify one thing - the names listed are names of members of the Pioneer Association, which means they had to be alive when it was organized in 1874. It would be their names which are listed, not the earlier pioneers. Jackie

    3. Hello Folks, I'm new to this website so I will need a lot of assistance from whomever is willing to help me. Here is my dilemma: One of my ancestors, who is best known as JAMES BROWNLEE SHERWOOD(1863-1937), is the son of GENERAL ISAAC R. SHERWOOD(1835-1925, Toledo, Ohio), and KATE BROWNLEE SHERWOOD (1841-1914, Toledo, Ohio). Both the General and Kate were very prominent figures in the history of Ohio. JAMES was born in Bryan,Ohio and schooled in Poland. He worked with his father in the newspaper publishing business most of his life. The areas of work, consisted of Canton, Cleveland and Ravenna, Ohio, the latter being his last place of work before retiring. This is where he made his home. James was working in Cleveland, Ohio, for the American Sportsman Magazine, where he met and married his wife, ANNA PEACE, Nov. 22, 1899. They later moved to Ravenna, where James was publisher and editor of the Portage County Democrat newspaper. They both also belonged to the First Congregational Church in Ravenna. James died at home in 1937. This is the last known knowledge I have for him, other than that he is buried in Woodland Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio in the family plot of his wife. All this information given was from his obituary. James and Anna had no children. His wife, ANNA, apparently wrote her Last Will and Testament in 1956. After that, I have absolutely no other information on her. This is one elusive ancestor that I'm having difficulty finding anything on her. (Aaarrrgghhh!) What I have in my possession at this time is as follows: Death Certificate for JAMES B. SHERWOOD. Obituary of JAMES BROWNLEE SHERWOOD. History of Portage County, a small mention of JAMES B. SHERWOOD. >From one of the local papers dated 1937, an article that mentions that JAMES B. SHERWOOD wrote a small phamplet called "Ships That Pass in the Night." A copy of the Last Will and Testament of ANNA P. SHERWOOD. Anyones help at this point is most welcomed. I'm open for suggestions. Thank you in advance. Mitsu Roberts-Soria Oxnard, CA

    2. previously did a lookup for Brownlee. Here's what I found: Egle's Notes and Queries of Pennsylvania 1700's-1800's (page 152) "The Carlisle Gazette" of subsequent date (Feb 3 1809) says, "It is very remarkable that after being nearly a half a century apart, they (James Elliott and wife) are both interred in the same grave; and it is no less strange that the very same person who dug his grave, opened it again for her, after a period of 26 years and three months." Perhaps there is no other will at Carlisle in which so many persons are mentioned, as in that of James Elliott. When it was made, Sept 21, 1783, his wife was absent in Ireland. The persons mentioned are as follows: William Elliott, second son of John. William Lyon, of Carlisle. Cousin James Brownlee, County Fermanagh, Ireland. Cousin William Armstrong. Cousin Nancy Armstrong. Cousin John Elliott, County Fermanagh, Ireland. William Wilson, son of Samuel, County Fermanagh, Ireland. Samuel Weakly, of Walnut Bottom, Cumberland County. David McCurdy, John Dillon, David King, Nathaniel Gillespie, and Steven Groves….(many more listed).. Cousin George Brownlee and his two sisters. (Page 51-52) Mrs. Poston married John Brownlee her second husband, a short time before her father's death. Shortly after… settled near Hannastown in Westmoreland county. "Jack" Brownlee became the great hunter and partizan ranger, and was second only to Brady as an Indian fighter…. In the middle of July, 1782, … hostile indians made their appearance…Captain Jack Brownlee was surprised in his dwelling…He met the Indians with a smile and shook them by the hand in a friendly way…His whole family…were taken prisoners…The prisoners, when they saw Jack Brownlee felt more buoyant…One of the women…addressed him as Captian…which was overheard by one of the Indians…He was carrying his child upon his back, and when his face was turned away an Indian slipped up behind him and sank a tomahawk into his brain, killing him instantly. Some of his children survived him, and their descendants now reside in the West.

    2. The Portage and Summit County Pioneer Association was organized in 1874, and the soft cover book was copyrighted in 1972 by Peggie Seitz James. I have a copy of the book. Briefly: the idea was first presented at a Haymaker Family Reunion, shortly after the Civil War. The families in attendance were Portage County families. They agreed to discuss this at a future reunion but the deaths of some of the key persons cancelled the reunions. Finally a date was set for 20 Feb 1874 and a number of relatives and old residents of Portage & Summit Counties met in the home of Samuel Olin. The first official meeting was 20 Oct 1874, and this was held at Christian Cackler's, who was elected the first president at 83 years of age. There was a display of pioneer relics and old time records, most of which were later given to the Congregational Church of Tallmadged Ohio (Summit County). The last record of a meeting was the 64th on 5 August 1938 at Brady Lake. Less than 40 persons attended. A collection of over 300 photos of people and scenes were lost in a fire on 3 April 1906 when Samuel Williard's home burned. The Articles of Incorporation are dated 31 Oct 1887. The information listed for each settler (if known) is: Date joined, name of member, age, married (date), settled and residence. I believe the first column might be date of death, but it is not labeled. Page 51 is "A few names of the old men and women who have died in Summit & Portage Counties, whose names are not on the record book - 1922-23. 3. Another stab at trying to break down this brick wall... Lewis and Libby CROCKER (who I inquired about yesterday) were members of an association called "The Summit and Portage County Pioneers Association". In a book called "Shadows of the Past" that a friend found at the Stow, Ohio Library there is mention of the Pioneer Association, but the only thing it lists is the date the individuals joined the association, from what I gather. Does anyone know anything about this association? Any ideas of where the group met, or where the membership rolls or minutes or history might have been kept? Where these records might be today? I'd bet there were many Portage County folks in that association, so many of us might benefit by locating the records. If I get any leads, I'll let the list know. Thanks! Kathy Funk

    3. Happy New Year! Well, I am truly stumped on this fellow and I am turning once again to the wonderful folks that make the Portage County mailing list so great. Lewis CROCKER was born about 1844 / 45, in Ohio. He was a member of the "Summit and Portage County Pioneers Association", according to the book "Shadows of the Past", which, I believe, was written about Stow, Ohio. Lewis CROCKER was married to Elizabeth (Libby) Kepler who was from Green Twp, which was at that time in Stark (now Summit) County, Ohio. Libby Kepler Crocker died in 1897, and Lewis was killed when his automobile was struck by a streetcar 30 April, 1917 in Akron or Kent, Ohio. He lived in Stow at the time, and it seems he was remarried, but I do not have his second wife's name. Driving his automobile at the time of the accident was Lewis' son Harry CROCKER. A Louis PALMER was the person who filed suit against the N.O.T Company because of the death of Lewis CROCKER. Does anyone out there know who Lewis Crocker's parents might be? Or anything at all about this family? I suspect he may be related to some of the other CROCKERs that lived in Portage County in the early 1800s, but this is just a guess at the moment. I'd love to hear from anyone researching the Crockers (or Palmers) in this area. Thanks! Kathy Funk [email protected] P.S. Don't forget to make a back up of your database.... just in case!
