There is a Joseph Shilling in the School Youth book in Portage School Dist 1 in 1832, with 1 child. No Claire listed. None of names in the Voters List. Terry
Something I want to share with you all... I went to the Ohio Historical Musuem resently. I was a little over-confident that I knew what I was looking for, since I had already written the Portage Courthouse, etc. for info. After spending all of my time wading through microfilm newspapers and census, the volunteer there asked if I had checked military enlistment records and death records. I nodded and said I had already checked directly with Ravenna's courthouse. The clock struck closing time and he said "Well, they sent us a lot of their records... the originals. So if they tell you they have nothing on him, they're probably partly right... they gave it to us." I could kick myself for not checking there earlier.

Can anyone help me with information on the family of Minnie Kelly from Mantua? Her father owned a store there in the late 1800's. Minnie was born in August of 1865, married Patrick McCormick from Niles, Ohio and they had a daughter Edna born 1880/81 in Mantua. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Vickie
Hi, There are BECKWITHs in Shalersville Township. In the Late 40s I dated a girl named Joyce BECKWITH who lived there. There is (or used to be) a farmer in Shalersville named Cliff BECKWITH. There is an apple farmer in Brady Lake, Portage County, Ohio, named BECKWITH. I am sure that they are listed in the Mantua, Ravenna, Kent phone directory if somebody will look up the name. Would do it but am a little too far away. James H.
