The person who originally brought this subject to our attention has a valid point. The list was devised so that individuals could exchange family information and ideas. While there are many topics, not directly related to genealogy, that may be of interest to list members, unless it is genealogy related, it has no place on this list. Messages such as "Thank you Mary for all your help" should not be sent to the list but directly to the individual. Yes I am sure everyone's delete button does work but until the e-mail is opened and read, you don't know if it contains usefull info or not so the delete button solution accomplishes nothing. Maybe a better solution is for the list manager to put out to the list that if an e-mail doesn't contain info of a genealogy nature, send it directly to the person, not the list. If you haven't guessed by now, I agree with less junk mail. If we could all work towards attaining that goal I think our list would benefit greatly. Now, that's just my opinion and I could be wrong, but I doubt it... So, I will sit back and watch from afar and no matter what the outcome... we can still be friends on a great list.
