My great-great grandfather was John J. Bell, born in Pickaway County. I obtained his Civil War pension file from the National Archives. It contained documentation of both his marriages, and birth records for all his children with his second wife. He enlisted as a Private in Company I, 4th Regiment Iowa Cavalry Volunteers, Winterset, Madison Co, IA. He was discharged as a Sergeant at St. Louis, MO due to disability resulting from heart disease due to Typhoid Fever. He died in 1878 and is buried in Moffitts Grove Cemetery in Guthrie County, Iowa.
