I am forwarding this in the hopes it may help someone with research and be put in the Ohio Archives. Hi List: I am searching for the parents of my great great grandmother, Eliza Kent. She was born in Virginia in 1822 and married Joshua Leazenbee/Leazenby in Pickaway County in 1843. She had sisters Elizabeth, who married William Jackson, Parthena, who married Ebenezer Cook and Jane. All of the sisters were also born in Virginia. I am searching for the parents of Eliza and her sisters. Does anyone know from which counties in Virginia settlers were most likely to have migrated from to Pickaway County in tthe early 1800's? Thanks and Happy New Year! Karen Conley klconley@webtv.net
Hi List: I am searching for any information on the family of Thomas Henderson and Eliza (Creighton) Henderson. Thomas died in 1852 and the last place I have found Eliza was on the 1860 Census. Thomas and Eliza had children Thomas, Jr., James, Robert, John, Joseph, Matilda, Mary, Martha, Eliza and Lucinda. I descend from Matilda, who married Samuel Gunnett. Any information at all will be most appreciated. Thanks and Happy New year! Karen Conley klconley@webtv.net
A question: Does anyone know if any of the adoption records for the county are open records? I am looking for an adoption that took place between 1906 and 1910. Would they be in probate court? Any help appreciated. Donna Wolf
If anyone has this info please answer to the list. I'm wondering too. I'm a bit confused about the piece of property that seems to have gone between Pickaway and Fairfield Counties in the early 1800's. I am looking for a John Kuntz/Coons/Koontz (wife may be Sarah) who settled in Clearcreek Twp in 1800 or 1801 along with the Dillsaver, Newhouse, and Moore families on or near Scippio Creek. Apparently, this land became part of one county and then another. I don't know which county I should be looking for records in. Clarification needed. Thanks, Raymond Coon Gresham, Oregon
Greetings all. I am searching for information on a Koontz/Coon/Coons, etc. family. I have information that puts George Coon in Clearcreek Twp, Fairfield County in November of 1808 (marriage to Mary Burket North) Their first son was born in Pickaway County in November of 1809. I believe they lived in the same place but the county line was moved. In 1813 the family moved to Hocking Twp, Fairfield Co. I should say here that I'm a bit confused about the area where they lived and when it was part of either county. It sounds like it may have been passed back and forth more than once. In any event, whatever county they were in, I am looking for the member of the family that first settled in the area in question. It may have been George or his father (name and spelling unknown).. I have reason to believe that George's mother's given name was Hanna and that George and possibly his father were from Pennsylvania. George had at least two brothers Samuel and Jacob and may have had another brother or relative Isaac. Where can I get records of the land purchase? Can I do it if I don't know the given name of the purchaser and how the surname was spelled? All help greatly appreciated. Raymond Coon Gresham, Oregon
Hi All I need your help. I want to place an add in one of the newspapers there in the county. I am looking for the name address and phone number (hopefully toll free) to contact the newspapers. I am going to place and add that hopefully will reach the senior citizens. I am going to ask for information, stories, photos, memoriabilla about the Moomey family that was in the county from around 1798 to around 1859. I sure hope someone will remember stories from their parents or grandparents on this family. I would also appreciate any suggestions on how to word this add. Am seeking information on Christian Carl Kliendienst who married Aug. 10, 1840 in Pickaway Co. to Rachel Richey. Is there a record of this marriage? Is there an 1840 Census for him there? Thanks for any help. Carol Hicks Illinois
I did an Ancestry.com search for you for both Christian and Carl as given names. I'm not sure whether they have Ohio indexed, so this isn't absolute, but the only one I found (using soundex) in 1840 in the whole US was: KLINDIST, CHRISTIAN State: PA Year: 1840 County: York County Township: N Codorus Page: 081 Database: PA 1840 Federal Census Index His neighbors were Adam Klindinst, Jacob Mummert, Daniel Clatfelter, John Chance, and John Kline. The family consisted of one male child, one female child, two adult males and one adult female. I don't have access to Pickaway marriage records, sorry. Len
To those of you who are searching for wills, I wish to say that the PickawayCounty Historical Society is wonderful. They helped me find an affidavit which a list of my gr-gr grandfather's possessions, but not the entire will. They could not find the actual will because someone had stolen it from the county records. However, what was furnished me was sufficient to establish my link to a Revolutionary War veteran, and my membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution. Give Pickaway a chance, they're great. C.Shanahan
Frank is right...the Pickaway County Gen. Society would be a good place to start. The society operates a good gen. library in Circleville. We did some research there late last winter. The volunteers there were extremely knowledgeable and very helpful. You can (probably still) link to information on this library by going to the Pickaway County Genealogy page. (You can link to any county in Ohio by going to: www.scioto.org/OHGenWeb .) Deborah
I believe the pre-1850 wills and estates were transferred from the county to the Pickaway County Historical Society. The last I heard they were still sorting through the many files that were sent. I have been waiting about a year for two records. These are voluneers and this is apparently a great task. Len
Karen, Keep in mind that Pickaway County was formed in 1810 from parts of Fairfield, Franklin and Ross counties. I understand that the genealogical society in Pickaway County is more active than most. That might be a good place to start. Frank L. Myers
