    1. Pickaway vs. Piqua Co.
    2. I want to thank everyone for their responses. Seems we have about 50-50 that say Pickaway was formerly Piqua and some not. For those who say it was, I would ask if they have any records or books on the subject. I will definitely have to do more research on this! Karen Karen

    1. Help - John Koontz/Koons/Coons/Cuntz/Coontz/etc.
    2. Raymond Coon
    3. I am looking for any information about John Koons/Koontz, etc who arrived in the Pickaway County area in about 1798 - possibly from Fayette County, PA (this was part of VA prior to 1786). John's wife may have been named Hannah, although this may have been a daughter. John is believed to have been a bricklayer or stonemason. "John" may have been "Johannes". The Koons may have traveled to the area with families names: DILSAVER, NEWHOUSE, and MOORE (Henry - said to be brother in law of John Koons). In 1813 two sons of John (George and Samuel) bought property and moved their families and mother to Hocking Twp., Fairfield County. The 1820 census in Fairfield County lists everyone but John so I am assuming that John died prior to 1813 and the move. There was another son: Jacob, and may have been daughters Margaret, Nancy, Barbara, and Hannah. I also have the following: John Cuntz signed a "Petition to Congress dated August 22, 1799 from the subscribers resineing on the publick lands on the East side of the Scioto River, in the Territor Northwest of the Rever Ohio 1787-1803 " OHIO RECORDS & PIONEERS vol XXXIII p25-26 John & Isaac Koontz signed a "Petition to Congress dated February 20, 1801 from the setlers on the publick land between the Waters of Muskingum, and Sciota River, in the Norhtwestern Territory." Territorial Papers of the US, vol III, The Territory Northwest of the River Ohio 1787-1803. p23 -25 OHIO RECORDS & PIONEERS vol XXXIII An Isaac Koontz also lived in Fairfield County during the same years that the decendants did. I am not sure that Isaac was a son but think that he may have been related. If anyone has access to the Petition to Congress dated February 20, 1801 could you tell me if John and Isaac were near each other on the petition? This may give me a clue whether they were near each other geographically during the time the petition was signed. Does anyone have access to an index of wills in that area at that time, if such existed? Were there any records of land transfers back then that might give a clue to ownership, etc.? Thanks very much, Raymond Coon Oregon

    1. Andrew Dawson b. Mar 24 1811
    2. Hello Listers: I have been researching the Dawson family off and on now for about 7 years. I am still looking for proof that Isaac Stahl/Stall Dawson, son of Andrew, b. Oct 5 1842, was born in Pickaway Co., OH. I am at a brick wall. I have ordered everything I know to order. What is the clincher is his Civil War Pension Records (about 2" think) only mention his birthplace in 3 places. Two say OH. One says Piqua Co. Well . . . that's Miami Co. I don't think this is correct, as I believe his sister Anna Dawson, married to Andrew King, was born in Pickway Co. Are there any researchers out there that can offer any assistance? Thanks, Karen.

    2. Niesen
    3. Here is what I *think* I know about the Ohio census records. There was no 1790 census for Ohio because it wasn't formed yet. It wasn't a state in 1800 either, and if there was a census of the Northwest Territory it must have burned because NARA doesn't list it. There was an 1810 census done, but it burned except for Washington County (which was much larger back then). However, when I looked for it in our local NARA office I was told that they didn't stock it. They thought it might be found in Ohio, maybe at the historical society. If anyone has better info than this, I'd love to hear about it. Len

    1. Pickaway Census records/Smith
    2. Hi, Could anyone tell me about census records for Pickaway. Are there none for 1790 & 1810 or are they under another state? I was looking at Ancestry.com's census' online and there weren't any Virginia or Kentucky census' until 1810. When I go to Virginia's census' in 1810, I don't have a clue what county I should be looking under for Pickaway? I know it was Ross County in Ohio before Pickaway, but haven't been able to find out what it was before then. I am researching Martin Smith who was born 1-23-1792 in Virginia and married Sarah Baker Sutherland in Deercreek township, Pickaway County, Ohio on January 17, 1815. His obituary states he moved to Ross county, Ohio in 1797. I know a James Smith was one of the early settlers of Deer Creek and I am trying to find information on his family and if he was Martin's father. Information on the internet says James came to Deer Creek in 1799, so I am trying to find out whether there are any Smiths known to be in Deer Creek by 1797 or if this is possibly the same family. Thanks for any help- Sandie Goeglein SGOEGL6016@aol.com
