My apologies to all of those that had repeats of this same message. Because my folks are spread out all over the country, I felt it was necessary to connect with all of the counties of Ohio. I did not understand that I would get such unfriendly mail from some people. Some of them were helpful. After reviewing the Acceptable policy use at rootsweb, I did not see anything about mass mailings. If one exists would you please direct me to that? N MIDST OF DISASTER RECOVERY To Some People it Seemed the World Had Come to an End. Editors note---This is an eyewitnesses account of numerous details concerning Saturday's devesting explosion and fire at Bingman's Drug Store. The writer was in the store when the bomb exploded. By Michael Gibson A peaceful Saturday afternoon for about 30 people in Bingman's Drug Store was quickly turned into a nightmare. The sudden transition erupted at about 12:50 p.m. when a man, later identified as Lee Holbrook, walked in the store with a lighted bomb. A woman employee who first saw him did not understand until Holbrook took her by the arm and said: "You had better get out of here, "I have a bomb." Holbrook, headed to the back of the store, was stopped by the manager, Charles Schieber, who apparently recognized the parcel to be a bomb. He grabbed for the box. A horrible game similar to touch football resulted, as a stockboy who had grabbed the bomb in the scuffle dropped it because of interference from Holbrook. Proprietor Schieber had almost made it to the rear door with the bomb when Holbrook caught up to him and started fighting with him. People in the store were in different stages of awareness when the bomb exploded. Those who did not realize the situation did not have time to take cover. Others who saw everything were glued to the spot, no one had time to dash for the door. One woman, the one Holbrook warned when he first entered the store suffered blast effect and multiple cuts from flying glass. At the instant of the explosion some three themselves on the floor. Immediately after the explosion smoke and falling bricks hampered rescuers. No one knew how many persons to look for at first. City Patrolman Jack Mills and Dennis Brown were among the first persons in the store. Mills personally saved six persons lives who were in a state of shock. Some could not see because of concussion. General confusion reigned as fire and police tried to maintain order. Many, in a state of shock stood horrified at the sight. Onlookers could not believe it. One person in the store during the blast, said he thought the world had come to an end. After he had warned the woman in the front of the store Holbrook supposedly said, "Don't try to stop me, I have a bomb and I mean business." The building entire was destroyed in a matter of a few minutes as wind shipped the fire into a frenzy. Heat grew so intense it melted signs on nearby buildings and kept firemen at a distance. ------------- There's a picture of the front of the building with this caption Grim Sight--This is all that remains of three business firms rocked by Saturday's explosion and fire on W. Main St. A despondent husband carrying a homemade bomb is blamed for the disaster. The loss is expected to reach hundred of thousands of dollars. -------------- Mass Funeral Rites Slated Beneath this are four pictures, left to right Charles A. Mrs. Willison 36, was born Nov 11, 1930, in Barberton, the daughter of Samuel and Olivia Decker Starkey. She was a ----?? Is survived by her husband Charles W. Willison who was employed by ......3 sons Richard, James, and Gary. Goes on to say something about her brothers, but this was page 2 and it came out the worst. I believe it next is saying she will be buried in Floral Hills. Friends of the family may call at The Mader Funeral Home. Mrs. Lagore was born in Circleville the daughter of Wayne and, who live a short distance from the drugstore. I'm sorry, I really can't make out the end of this article. At the other library (though they don't have newspapers on microfilm, etc.) have obit books someone compiled from Clarksburg. I will check there to see if an article is available and perhaps easier to read. ------------------ Another article titled Blast, Inferno Claim Lives of Five Persons Bomb Carrier Listed as Victim, Mss Funeral Rites Set (this is also on front page) By The Herald Staff Circleville is slowly but surely recovering from what is considered the worst tragedy in the city's history. Disaster struck quickly at 12:50 p.m. Saturday when a despondent husband carried a homemade bomb in to Bingman Drug Store, 148 west main Street. The explosion and fire of tremendous proportion that followed claimed at least 5 lives, destroyed three downtown businesses and numerous upper level apartments and left the community grief-stricken. The casualty list compiled after a round the clock inspection of the demolished area disclosed this toll: Charles A. Schieber 48, of 595 Ridgewood Drive proprietor of Bingman Drugs: Ted Foster 37, (which would mean his date of birth should be 1930), Knollwood Village -- pharmacists: Mrs. Lawrence O. Lagore, 117 E. Mill St, clerk; Mrs. Charles Willison 36 Route 4--bookkeeper; Lee Holbrook Circleville; identified as the man who carried the bomb in the store. The only slight consolation is the sudden holocaust is that the death toll was held to five. Initial reports indicated at least seven or more persons were missing. Estimates note that more than 30 people were in the store when the blast occurred. Rubble and debris remain today on W. Main St. as a grim reminder of what happened. This along with Saturdays spouting flames following smoke and fateful reality that lives were lost will be a tragedy ....there's more to this article, but due to it's being on the edge and the nature of them trying to make a copy....it got cut off. this also continues on page two again worse to read -------------- Another Article on page 2, Emergency List at Hospital Swelled by Explosion, Fire, also not readable. ----------------- Blast Aftermath another title from page 2 also not readable ------------------- Searching Family Stories with Sandy
Hi List: Does anyone on this list know where I might find microfilmed copies of Pickaway County newspapers from 1848? The Ohio Historical Society does not have that year and last week I was at the library in Circleville but they did not have it either. I am looking for information on the drowning death of John B. Kent, husband of Isabelle Hare and father of John Lemuel Kent. John Lemuel Kent was a Post Master for Circleville in the late 1800s. Any advice at all will be most appreciated. Hi all Drove from Chillicothe to Columbus today after a meeting on route 104 and noticed several cemeteries and would like clarification of the names. Anyone out there know? I spotted a new sign for Rowland Memorial Cemetery right around mile marker 19 just south of Andersonville. I don't recall seeing a listing of a cemetery with that name before. North of Yellowbud on 104 across the street from The River of Life Church and Wayne township House is a cemetery in terrible shape. No signs, fence etc. Anyone know the name of this cemetery? Still on route 104 a hard to read sign that I believe only reads Jackson township Cemetery. In each of these areas it's not real clear what county as signage was pretty much non existent, or I simply didn't see it. Would imagine the first cemetery is Ross? Are the other 2 Pickaway? Thanks
Thanks to all the list members, who responded, for the great tips. Cathy

I believe he may be the son of Abner Bell who was born in Virginia 1793 and migrated first to Hancock County, then Pickaway County, Indiana and finally to Madison County, Iowa. I have transcribed quite a few records from Madison County, Iowa and Pickaway County, Ohio in the hopes that someone will recognize this information and make a connection. If you have information about Abner or John J. Bell, please contact me. This write-up is divided into four sections: (1) Census records, (2) History articles, (3) Marriage records, and (4) Cemetery records. That winter BELL taught school in the Clanton schoolhouse and in the spring of 1851 moved to section 16, and bought forty acres of school land. That spring a log schoolhouse was built, in which he taught a three months' term. This was the first school in that district. He sold out in the next spring. Joachim HUGLIN bought it in 1866 and built the flouring mill, which continued to run until torn down and moved away in 1879. History of Madison County, Iowa, page 301: The Adamson schoolhouse was located and built on section 35 in the early 1850's. Campbell Mill Campbell mill, just above Holliwell bridge, was built in 1851 by Dan CAMPBELL and John DAUGHTERTY. Abner BELL and Aaron MCKINZIE helped on its construction. This was a sash sawmill and was purchased of the original owners in 1855 by Alexander ATKINSON, who sold it to Messrs. MOORE & YOUNG in 1857. The purchasers were, respectively, uncle and father of ex-Recorder John T. YOUNG. I would like to welcome those of you new to this site and tell you there are some really great folks who are willing to help just for the asking. I, myself do Volunteer research at Andersonville Civil War Prison in Andersonville Georgia. There are Any research I do is absolutely at NO cost and I am willing to do what I can. There are 3857 prisoners on record from the state of Ohio and more than 1100 who died here, I thought I would send my offer. Here are my sources of research. There are 2 online databases to do lookups.....One by name...one by Company and Regiment. I also have a copy of the Dorence Atwater Death list which has the names and grave numbers of 12960 graves with only 460 marked as " UNKNOWN " This along with a CD I have which contains 34,000 names of the 45,000 who were imprisoned there which helps me find prisoner records because of misspellings of the names or alternate names. I visit the prison site every couple of weeks and have access to the onsite databases as well as the physical files. I would like to let you know of another service I offer which is to take photos of graves for a small fee. Please do not concider this spam as my research offer is FREE for the asking ad will be posted on this county site only once. If there is anything I can do in helping your research at Andersonville, please just ask. Hello, I am doing research on diners/lunch wagons. My research has brought me to Silver Creek, NY(Ward & Dickinson dining car co) which in turn has brought me to focus on Ohio. They sent many of their diners to Ohio. Some Diner builders in Ohio: Galion dining car co. of Galion, OH and the (Earl Richardson)Rich dining car co. of Dayton, OH, both of these Ohio companies were probably short lived ventures in the 1920's. What I am looking for is any information on past diners in Ohio or these companies(Maybe your relatives worked at/owned these diners or companies) and also, leads on any diners that existed(past or present) in Ohio, as I am only aware of about 10-15 diners in the state. For example, a friend of mine JUST recently heard about a diner in Wellington, OH that has been there since probably 1925. Not only do they have a good breakfast(had to drive out there from eastern NY to check it out!) but it's a type of diner we've never seen before. Since I'm doing my research from a mostly historical standpoint, if you remember a diner "a long time ago" in a certain location, please let me know. Best Regards, Mike Engle speigletown@hotmail.com http://www.nydiners.2ya.com/ To see what information I have collected so far about some Ohio diners, check here: http://www.geocities.com/cornwallace55/ohio.html _________________________________________________________________ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com
The following photo copies of obits came to me from a Pickaway Newspaper, though no header was photo copied when they were copied, the hand written in dates are courtesy of the Pick. Co. Gen. Soc. May 23 1907 (The date written in by hand) WILL DRAG SCIOTO From Columbus to the Ohio River for Body of Charles B. Burr Odd Fellows of Ohio will drag and search the Scioto River from Columbus to the Ohio, in the hope of finding the body of Charles B. Burr. missing director of public service and member of Dennison lodge I.O.O.F. Ivor Hughes, grand master of Ohio Odd Fellows, and A. W. Young, grand representative of the order in the state, held a conference. They and many other Odd Fellows believe that Mr. Burr committed suicide by drowning. the plan being considered is to have each town along the 125 miles of river from here to Portsmouth offer men thru its Odd Fellows lodge. One thousand men, it is believed, can be secured in this way as volunteers. This would mean approximately eight men for each mile of river of four men on each bank. They would both drag the river bed and search the banks and underbrush. Mr. Hughes, who originated the plan, said that the work would be begun just as soon as the water subsided. It will be pushed thru without delay. He declares he is positive that neither the family nor anyone else cal tell anything about the mission man. --------------------------- JUNE 7, 1907, (date written in by hand) OLDEST WOMAN IN OHIO DEAD. RE: Ohio Soldiers in the War with Spain, 1898-99 ...Send me the first & last name and I'll try to look it up. I have the high-price subscription to Ancestry.com: [Description: "The Official Roster of Ohio Soldiers in the War with Spain, 1898-99" was compiled under the direction of Frank B. Willis, Governor, Charles Q. Hildebrant, Secretary of State, and Benson W. Hough, Adjutant General of Ohio and published under the authority of the General Assembly in 1916. It is the official record of the Ohio regiments in the Spanish-American War. After the Maine was exploded in Havana Harbor, the United States decided to avenge the deaths of the ship's men by going to war with Spain. When the president asked for troops, Ohio answered the call, and this database is a record of the more than 19,000 men from Ohio who served in the war. This index was compiled by Debra F. Graden.
