    1. [OHPICKAW] Scott Beatty
    2. Donna Van Zandt
    3. PORTRAIT AND BIGRAPHICAL RECORD of FAYETTE, PICKAWAY and MADISON COUNTIES, OHIO Chicago-Chapman Bros.-1892 Pg. 436 Scott Beatty, a resident of Perry Township, Pickaway County, Ohio, is a native citizen of Marion Township, Fayette County, having had his birth September 9, 1850. The father bears the name of I. N. Beatty, and is one of the most prosperous farmers and stock-raisers in Pickaway County. A sketch of the father will be found elsewhere in this book. The mother was known in her maidenhood by the name of Margaret Hidy, and with her husband, was a native of Ohio. Our subject received the advantages of a common-school education, supplemented by a course of two years at the Southwestern Normal at Lebanon, Ohio. At the age of twenty-one years he commenced in active life for himself, taking up farming and stock-raising on the same farm he now occupies and which occupation he still carries on successfully. Mr. Beatty was married in July, 1875, to Mary Decker, a native of Ohio, and a daughter of A. S. Decker, a native of Switzerland. The father came to this country at an early age and engaged in the business of harness-making, which vocation he has ever since continued. He married, in 1850, Catherine Timmons, a native of Ohio, and by this union two children have been born, Mary, the wife of our subject, being the elder. J. B. is now living in Fayette County. One child has come to bless the home and fireside of our subject and his estimable wife, to whom they have given the name of Maggie Alma, who was born July 3, 1876. Our subject is a staunch Republican in his political views, and, in his religious belief, is a Universalist. He is a member of F. & A. M. Lodge No. 392, at New Holland, and also belongs to the John A. Logan Lodge, K. of P., and has belonged to the school Board, and been President of the same for years. His farm consists of two hundred and forty broad and fertile acres of finely improved land and is located three and one half miles from New Holland. On this place he carries on general farming, and is an extensive dealer in stock, having some of the best in the township. He is a man who is well liked by everyone who meets him, and is a whole-souled and genial man, who has hosts of friends and acquaintances.

    1. [OHPICKAW] Death Certificate / Cemetary Question
    2. Craig Laird
    3. Fellow Listers: I have an ancestor that was buried in New Holland Cemetary in 1852. He and his family were Presbyterians and lived a few miles east of there. Where might I find a death certificate, newspaper account or other factual information on his death? I read somewhere that the state or county did not require death certs until the 1860's. Thanks! --Craig Laird claird@rma.edu

    2. Rebecca: Thanks so much for your e-mail of the 2nd. Some of your information was new to me, and I do appreciate it. I have researched in Lancaster for both my Reber and my Homrighous surnames; and have visited the cemeterys where my ancestors are buried; one near Royalton and the Amanda Twp cemetery, and also saw Valentine Reber's house in Amanda Twp, and then spent a day in Circleville. I visited briefly with two distant cousins, Libby Dunkel and Anne Collins, in that area. I need more time, though, in Circleville because I also have a connection with Bells in that area. My Melinda Bell b 29 Mar 1825, Circleville, married my Daniel Creek after her family moved to Hancock Co. about 1832. I have reason to believe her parents may be John J. Bell and Sarah, but I have not proved it as yet. John is buried in Hancock Co. Thank you again. 3. Hello Ruth, I noticed that you were working on a RUSH family name. My grandfather's sister (Mary Francis) married a RUSH back in the 1880s era, in the Grove City area. I know that Aunt Mary & husband are buried in Concord Cemetery at Grove City, She died about 1930. I have completely lost track of that branch of the family, but do recall she had a son named Milo Rush, probably b. ca 1890 to 1900. Does this tie in to your RUSH family ?? Marriage records). He was in Pickaway with an Andrew Breiner (m. Julia Ann Bechtel, d. Circleville 1853). Here's what I need: Land records: Where did John an Andrew come from? Perhaps history of Pickaway county: account of early settlers? I'd be willing to pay a little bit for someone to look these up Thanks Tim Timothy J. 2. Hi Dianna, This might be of interest to you >From State Centennial History of the County of Ross, Ohio. Vol II reprint edition, a limited reprint of the 1902 edition, by Henry Holcomb Bennett, Editor. Compiled by Ross County Genealogical Society, Gateway Press, Inc. Baltimore 1981. This is page 576, your people are right after my Fred C. Mader...<grn> Nelson C. Maddux, veteran of the civil war and long prominent in the agricultural affairs of Deerfield township, is a descendant from one of the early settlers of Ross County. David and Elizabeth Maddux left their native state of Maryland during eh earlier portion of the eighteenth century and were among the first to locate in the vicinity of Clarksburg. Both lived to an advanced age and in the fullness of year's became tenants of the little cemetery near the village where repose the remains of so many pioneers of the past. They had a family of ten children, all now dead, their names being: Benjamin, Collins, Zacharish, william, Mitchell, John, smith, Samuel, Sarah (wife of William Norris), and Mary. Smith, the 7th of these children was born in Maryland8-2-1800, grew to manhood in Ross county and married Eleanor Norris. The latter, who was a daughter of Arnold Norris, a soldier of the Revolution, had recently come from Virginia with her parents. There were six children by this union: Harriet (deceased), William, John, and Angeline (deceased), Nelson C., and Elizabeth, wife of Benjamin Bates of new Holland, Ohio. Nelson C. Maddux was born near Clarksburg, Ohio 12-18-1838, and when two years old had the misfortune to lose his father by death. After this event, his mother became an inmate of the home of her brother Zaachariah who assisted in rearing the children, and Nelson C. remained with hs uncle until he became of age. For a while thereafter he was engaged in farming, but this occupation was interrupted by the opening of the civil war and his enlistment in Company K, Eighty-ninth Dianna, this is where they page ends, sorry I don't have the whole article. I was recently at the cemetery they must be referring to near the Meth. church in Clarksburg, took a couple of general pictures which are not yet developed. Would you like copies? I did notice the names of Maddux. Do you have photos of any of the stones? I will be going again and get some if you would like. My aunt and uncle lived around the corner from there, Garrisons. Millie is now gone and Uncle Harold is very bad and in a nursing home. Used to spend lots of time in the summer with them. As a kid though, I didn't even remember the cemetery being there. Have been to that church several times with my cousins, who don't live in the area any longer. I was making my way back from Greenfield on a mission of finding some Mader's graves (no luck on the graves, large cemetery and I didn't have exact location, working on that for another trip), came home the back way, no freeway and went through Clarksburg. It's been years since I was there. Must go for now, Sandy Also I've sent marriages of Maddux, Madock, etc to both Ross & Pickaway, did you get those as well?
