Hi all, Although the Bristol Tunnel fire occurred during the same strike, it was unrelated to the New Straitsville mine fire. The idea was to cut off the outlet for shipping from Shawnee (which used a different railroad line than the Hocking Valley Line from New Straitsville anyway. The Bristol Tunnel on the Shawnee-Newark run was destroyed coal shipments were brought to a halt. The fire DID provide the impetus for building the Zanesville and Western line as a second route (via Corning to the east) into Shawnee. "Was organized in 1882 and served at the Bristol tunnel fire during the big strike of 1884. The equipment of the Shawnee Fire Department is second to non in the County. The completeness of the necessary apparatus can be easily seen in the accompanying cut." (Then there is a picture of the equipment and the volunteers. They were: "H. A. Carter--hoseman. Isaac Tarlton--Chemical Engineer Thomas Thomas--Hoseman (also Night Marshal) Joseph Jaynes -- Chief Engineer, (also Day Marshal)--my great-grandfather too! Jackson Davis C. T. Griffith--Hoseman T. B. Jones, Jr.-- Hoseman M.J. O'Toole--Hoseman Peter Krebs--Chief since 1895 John Abel--Driver" If anyone has interest in this picture I will send it to you off list via attachment.
