I just finished reading Smoke in the Valley by William Yno. The book is fiction but is based on the strike and ensuing fire in New Straitsville. It also provides a picture of the living conditions, Catholics and Protestants, blacks and whites, etc. for the miners. I am from Perry County (Junction City) and have never heard the story that is related in the book as to what happened to the black scab workers employed by the coal companies to replace the strikers.
