Hello, I would be very interested in the story of the fire in the mines. My grandparents lived in Shawnee all their lives, and when I visited them each each they would tell me stories. One story was that there was a fire underground and years ago you could see the flames burning through the hills there. I guess I never believed them, until I just now saw this about the fire in the mines....could their story have been true? Not that they were liars or anything, but it seemed like a farfetched story to a little girl from the "big city" :o) They also told me Shawnee was a bustling town at one time, and I thought that was really a tall tale, but I have done some research on that and found that this was really true! Thanks, Marcia > > The story of the strike and the fire in the mines - I will > leave to others. >
Yes, Marcia, the story of the mine fires are true. My great-uncle, William Hoy, owned one of the mines that was on fire. My mom tells me that my grandmother sold tickets to view the mine fire from his mine. And my mother also tells me of the days she couldn't go to school because the road from Old Town (Straitsville) to New Straitsville would be steaming/collapsing from the fire........ I thought Angela had some things on her website about the mine fires, but it appears to be down at the moment.
