Interesting thought. I've found greater deviations the older people get in the census, so perhaps the people didn't know their exact ages - particularly as they got older. I think one of the reasons ages are sometimes off is that the census taker asked someone else ie. the kids/neighbors. How many eleven year olds know how old their parents are? Father's out in the far field and maybe mother too and who's left at the house when the census taker arrives? The kid would most likely know how old his siblings were. Yes, I agree. My Grandfather was from a large, large family and most of them didn't know their exact birth date because they weren't recorded back then and the kids were a commodity (working on the farm, coal mines, etc.). He never did go to school ( to gage his age) so by the time he grew up and started asking his age no one really knew when he was born just approx. year and date. This side of my family was from Ky. Way back in the hills. What a life. Sherole "Joseph, Jim" wrote: > Interesting thought.
