Hello Perry County historians & genealogists: My ancestor, John Palmer, was buried in the 1880's in the Salem United Brethren Church cemetery near Junction City. Is this the same as Old Zion United Brethren Church? Is the Salem or Old Zion United Brethren Church still an active congregation and hold services? Was the German? Mennonite? Thanks to anyone who can help me with these questions. TPalmer Brookfield, WI Researching PALMER, SPOTTS, RING, KENNEDY, MCMULLIN, WHIPPS, RICKETTS
According to the "History of Fairfield and Perry Counties, 1883," this appears to be separate Churches and congregations. Timothy Fisher has this book scanned onto his website if you want to read further about Jackson Twp. or you may contact me offline. I'd like to hear from you, because I am a Ricketts descendant. Our "Guide to Cemetery Locations" places these Churches on opposite ends of the Twp., also. Your relative is actually buried in the Salem Evang. U. B. Church Cemetery. This is one of the "twin" Churches at that site, and referred to as the upper Church. The other being the Salem Chapel U. B. in Christ (lower) Church and cemetery. I have talked to the cemetery caretakers. They attend the Salem Church, but I can not verify if both are active at that location. It is not Mennonite to the best of my knowledge.
