Donna, I am the Perry Co. Chapter, OGS Treas. and Cor. Sec. I also have helped with the publishing of several books for the Chapter during my time as a member. The "Perry County Births, 1867 - 1908" was published by our group. One must realize that this is a "true copy" which means the data was Xeroxed and shrunk to fit a standard size book, not copied by hand. In my personal copy I see the birth in question, but mine reads that the mother was Vina Harlon. When the index at the Probate office was prepared (many years ago) the w was apparently misread as an n. These letters can be very similar in some of the older hand writing, so I can appreciate how the error could be made. Often the writing appears to be foreign if one has not had some experience reading it. In all fairness to the clerks at Probate, we need to realize that first, the girls working there now were not the ones who prepared the index; second they can not change official records without absolute verification; and third they are doing what is asked of them within their job duties. Most rules and regulations, prices, etc. are pre set. You would be surprised at how many requests are made of them based on someone's assumption or family lore that has no proof. :-( I have found errors, also. One in particular was in a collateral line of mine where the father -in- law is incorrectly listed as the groom on the marriage cert. (This was not a transcribed version, but a Xerox copy of the original.) I would not have known this was wrong had my Mother not known the individuals personally. Errors happen, and sadly, will happen again because we are human. Census records are a perfect example for many of us following the wrong trail because of someone's inability to spell correctly or misunderstanding what might have been said with an accent, taking data from a person who didn't know the facts, etc. As to the birth index that we offer for sale, I can make a notation of this in my personal copy and add it to a file I have for any corrections that need to be made to other publications that we print or reprint. This file may contain anything from misplaced punctuation mark to data that is incorrect. When we become aware of an error, we make every attempt to verify and correct it. Cemetery inscriptions are something that we strive to read very carefully, but old stones are often times very difficult to read. When possible we Xerox, scan or take digital pictures of data to avoid as many mistakes as we can. All in all, we feel we do the best that we can to preserve data and bring genealogical material to the public. Hi - I am looking to see if an Isaac or Susanna Hitchcock left a will or estate in Perry County, Ohio? The last record that is avaiable on Isaac while he was living was his Revolutionary War Pension application dated 1835 which was later rejected. At that time Isaac was living in Perry County, Ohio. I am trying to locate this information to help someone complete a supplemental in the Sons of the American Revolution. Thank you, Christopher T.
