    3. Hello, You sent me an email back in March. I kept your email so I could respond when and if I ever found out who my GGrandfather and GGrandmother was. Was able to obtain my Grandfather's death certificate (Allen Grffin) and his Father was Henry Griffin. There were two Henry Griffin's in Perry County. The one you mentioned below was the Sr. then another Henry Griffin who was younger and a Dr. Have not been able to connect my Grandfather to either because of the early census. As you know they only named the head of household. My Grandfather was born in 1856 in Perry County, Straitsville. I'm thinking that Henry Sr. had a Henry Jr. (possibly the 10-15 year old male or one of the 5-10 year old males) By 1856 any one of them would have been old enough to be married and have a family. I thank you for this information because I'm sure that this Sr. Henry would be my GGGrandfather. I'm going to the Nelsonville library next week. Stopped in there today and they have a very nice genealogy section with Perry County info. Is there anything I can look up for you? I'll keep my eye out for Rachel Griffin. You asked earlier if I had any Lanning connections. Only indirectly. My Aunt Edna Mae Horn married William Lanning. His family was from down in the hills here someplace but don't really know where. Either Athens, Hocking or Perry. Sherole, Logan, Ohio Barbara & George Grenier wrote: > Hi all > > Anyone researching these Griffins? 3. I don't think your Allen is one of the of the males listed with Henry Griffin sr. I have a theory on who they are but want to work on it some more. It just hit me these last several days who it might be. And I may be extremely off base. I think the Henry Griffin on the 1830 Harrison co census is likely the Henry Griffin sr 1840 Perry co census. If you will look at the ages on both 1830 and 1840 it doesn't seem likely they would be the parents of those children. Now there are two other Henry Griffins in the area. Henry Griffin: 1840 Hocking Falls page 149 1 male under 5 1 male 20-30 Henry Griffin 1 female under 5 2 females 20-30 probably one is Elizabeth Bartlett who married Henry Griffin in 14 Aug 1834 and again probably the same Henry in 1850 Hocking co Falls twp page 046 Haven't had a chance to look that up yet. and..... Henry Griffin on the 1850 Perry co Salt Lick census I believe he is the one listed as Henry Griffin jr on the 1840 census. Griffin, Henry age 39 Physician born PA [Rush], Sarah 33 OH married Nov 1837 RUSH is one my surnames in Perry but I can't place Sarah right now. John W 11 OH Henry J 9 OH Silvester 7 OH Margaret 4 OH Sarah E 2 OH Mary 1 month OH I would look this family up in 1860 to see if they have a child named Allen. Also the one in Hocking co. My relatives (maternal side) lived near the Perry/Hocking border near Straitsville. Barbara Brea CA At 08:33 PM 9/29/01 -0700, you wrote: >Hello, >You sent me an email back in March. 1. [OHPERRY] 1819 Tax Record
    2. Timothy E Fisher
    3. Good Evening All, My cousin Deloris Girard sent me a copy of the 1819 Tax Record for Perry Co. some time back and I've just gotten around to putting it up on my website. I believe she obtained this information from the State Auditors office. Since this is from 1819, I would have to think that if you could prove direct descendancy to any of these folks, this document may be a way to become part of the First Families of Ohio or the Perry Co. Pioneers. First Families is program sponsored by the Ohio Genealogical Society (OGS) to honor those persons with family in Ohio prior to 1821. More information about that program is available here: http://www.ogs.org/lineage.htm Perry Co. Pioneers is a similar program sponsored by the Perry Co. Chapter of OGS for those persons with family in Perry Co. prior to 1830. Information about that program can be found here: http://www.perrygenealogy.net/perryogs.htm The 1819 tax document can be access via the main page at my site http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~tfisher/tefishermain.htm The names in this document will come up in the search engine later this week. Enjoy, Tim Timothy E. Fisher OhioBicentennial.com http://www.ohiobicentennial.com

    3. Hi Timothy and everyone on the Perry County list! What a great addition to the website! I think that a lot of "brick walls" could be scaled with the use of tax lists. I am the chair of First Families of Ohio and would like to clear up any misunderstanding about what is necessary for documentation to prove the early Ohio residency. A real estate tax list proves only that the person owned land in that county; it does not prove that they were a resident. Many of early Ohio's landowners were speculators who never set foot on their property. For a tax list to be acceptable as proof of residency, one of the following must be true: 1. It was a personal property (chattle) tax list. People were taxed on their personal property where they lived. 2. If it is a real estate tax list, it must actually state that it was a "Resident" tax list. Some early tax lists in Ohio distinguished between residents of the county and non-residents. The 1819 tax list that's on Tim's site is a "present proprietor" list, which means that it is a list of current owners. (Some early Ohio tax lists have columns for both the present proprietor and the original proprietor.) This does not mean that this tax list is not important. It is *very* important. It shows that the person owned land. With that information, you can (and should!) search for land records. Tax lists in Ohio are a year behind; therefore, this 1819 tax list reflects activity from 1818. That means that, more than likely, the deeds for the purchase of the lands in question are going to be found not in Perry County, but in the parent county (either Fairfield, Muskingum or Washington, depending on the township). I would be happy to answer any questions about First Families of Ohio or about the Ohio Genealogical Society. (BTW, if you are interested in being inducted next year, the deadline is 31 December 2001.) My thanks to Tim for the plug for First Families of Ohio and OGS. :-) Happy hunting!
